Beyond Meat headed to Chapter 11 bankruptcy

The plant-based meat company has reported falling sales and dwindling cash.
Reviewed by Celine Provini

The people who like plant-based meat really like it, but that's a niche audience that won't grow all that much. That has created the "frozen yogurt store" effect for Beyond Meat.

When one self-serve frozen yogurt chain opens in your town, it has lines out the door. The addition of a second store puts both in peril, and further openings split the market so much that nobody succeeds.

That has happened with Beyond Meat, and no amount of clever talk from founder and CEO Ethan Brown can change that.

I got burned on Beyond tot he tune of a couple thousand a few years ago and have stayed away from that stuff since.

Interesting place to post this. Is this a mass email from a short seller?

I was just curious more than anything.

I got dinged when Beyond was around $150 a share. They announced some sort of partnership with Taco Bell to have menu items with their stuff.

I watched it carefully rise to $150, bought 1000 shares on margin on that news, and quickly watched it drop a few bucks (in like 5 minutes).

Had to sell. No choice.

I don't trade in shares. Was more interested from the health view point.

I am thinking that cooked & processed carbs are harmful. By contrast saturated fat is healthy.

Unfortunately the trend seems to be to demonize saturated fat. This results in the increased promotion of cooked & processed carbs, which in my experience, is the real killer

How is this related to Beyond Meat though? Doesn't it have less saturated fat than beef?

I am interested in products that have more saturated fat (& less cooked & processed carbs)

I think such products will be healthier
So you're just lamenting the business troubles of Beyond Meat?
AFAIK there's a lot of evidence supporting the notion that saturated fat is bad for you, and likewise with excessive carbs, they can both be bad.

I know the data says saturated fat is bad but from personal experience I feel better when I have saturated fat

There are a few companies that are now focusing on fat — but it is mainly for flavor. I think we need more focus on fat for health

I don't really think that's a great metric.

It's no big secret that fat is flavor, that's why we love butter, that's why wagyu beef and other well-marbled steaks are prized. I don't think we're going to focus on fat for health when the data shows that some fats are worse than others, even if some people "feel better" when they have it (and yes, we do need some fats in our diet).

My goals with fake meat have more to due with ecology and animal welfare. I eat meat, but I think it's much less than the typical non vegetarian American. If everybody tried a little, it would equal a lot.

Bummer if they don't find a buyer. I like some of their products. Last trip to Sam's and Publix the beef prices were jacked up a good 20%. Makes the plant based more price competitive. I should include that is referring to whole cuts. The grass fed ground beef was still $5.78 per pound I think.

I don't really buy fresh meat for the house. Spam and sausages. All the finest cuts :^D Oh, and canned fish. I eat a lot of canned fish. Everyone knows the Catholic theory that fish ≠ meat is bullshit, right? :^D Also incidental meat in canned/frozen prepared food, but I generally stick to vegetarian with those.

It's okay to eat fish cuz they don't have any feelings.

Beyond Meat is a expensive parody of Chinese tofu in soy sauce, and only those with a Philistine palate woukd enjoy it. Not surprise that some Americans loved their Doritoes and Twinkies so much that shifting ot Beyond FauxTofu somehow tastes good to them.

It is not. Because the micronutrient profile and effect on behavior is different. Even thought the original distinguishing factor was land based vs water based. (Carne vs pesce). And some would argue pescatarianism is better than red meat(not that I think it is that meritorious)

Fish is an animal, and was granted an exception cause religious fuckwads are hypocrites, and wanted a loophole around the rules. Eat a dove. Flying meat isn't really meat. Deer can't be meat cause they have antlers, not horns. I can do this all night. Want to get around some rules? I can give you justification for anything. It'll still be wrong, but you'll have your righteous justification.

a Singapore-based startup will produce marine bioactives, starting with Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN), a high-value ingredient used in skincare, wound healing, & regenerative medicine.

It is currently extracted from salmon sperm.

Up there with - "Milk, it does a body good!", "Got milk?", and "the incredible edible egg!"

I eat beef critter, but I like to supplement it for various reasons. I'd miss beyond products. Hopefully someone else will buy them when the time comes.

I don't have a whole foods near me, do they have their own label?
