ignoring the industry analytics
BackBlaze uses shucked external drives.

They (AFAIK) don't pay for enterprise drive lines, of which "NAS" drives are supposed to share a lineage.

Consumer-facing drives, 3 years, fine.

But it's NOT just a voluntary warning, it interferes with hot spares and rebuilds. Didn't you watch the videos?

And this is FAR from the first anti-consumer thing that WD has done. That's OK, I switched to Exos drives years ago. Probably bought my last WD drive. Unless you think that using SMR drives branded as "NAS" is somehow acceptable behavior.

I guess we're just going to head in the sand about the official reply from Synology.

  • WDDA not enabled by default, user must manually enable it
  • Explicit ignore/suppress setting for this warning
How this is anything more than a voluntary warning the user can choose to ignore and suppress is a mystery to me.

Can someone please educate me, I’m not a video watcher.
While I do not have NAS, I could easily see myself getting one.
