I got an email from a close friend, he had been held up in London at gun point, effects stolen, needed money wired to get him home

my first email back was "why are you in London on a one way ticket?" since even with effects stolen you can get your ticket re-issued

my next email informed him he could possibly get the embassy to get him home, give me the police report information and I will contact the embassy

and my final email was to get a number for me to call him

all his answers were suspicious but I did not want to abandon a good friend and maybe he just couldn't converse over the tubes

bottom line, my friends yahoo account was cracked and all his email contacts got this email requesting money be wired

beware, most scams exploit the greed we all have, this scam exploited our good will and sentiment

the greed scams are worthless against me and my kind but these good will scams are very effective against people like myself

Is it so weird guys? I can't believe people are falling for this. Their emails were hacked. It's always the same story - I am stuck in a foreign country and I need you to wire me a few grand.

Halp!

Im stuck in Timbuktu and my personal effects were stolen! I took a one way flight just this morning from DFW, landed here and was robbed by the damn cab driver! I hitched a ride to Starbuktu and begged someone to borrow a laptopu to post this request for cashola.

So I need everyone who reads this to like send me all the money they can so I can rent a room and look for a job here in Timbuktu, as I kind of like it here. If not, Ill have to beg this person with the laptop for a place to stay. 🙁

Your friend,

Felix

sucky, but the bad spelling kind of gives it away...that's how most scammers type.

I could this working against some people though.

my ex-coworker's facebook/gmail account got hacked and I got a chat from them with this exact story. I spent 30 minutes fucking with the guy before telling him I was standing right next to the guy who got his account hacked.

ex-coworker is an idiot that uses the same password on everything.

The problem is my friend is french and doesn't speak English. If it wasn't for that I might have clicked the link. It might be malicious or not but I am not going to click and find out.
And don't worry, I removed the link in the copy of the email in this post.
You got to be careful out there.

Warning. Don't check your E-mail or anything else you wouldn't want stolen over wi-fi hotspots. Extremely easy to get your passwords.
