Here is my little story:
Ordered a in-stock marked laptop before noon PST on Monday and selected 2 day shipping in an attempt to get it on Thursday the latest, given their 1-2 business days before item ships policy.
Get an email from them 9:07am PST on Tuesday saying they having problem verifying the shipping address with the credit card...even though I have ordered from them on at least two other occasions using the very same credit card and shipping address. The address was on file with the card company on all 3 purchases. Call them up 3 minutes after email and re-verified the address.
Wednesday morning before they open I find that the status go from Processing to Packaged...and stay at Packaged. Have a nagging feeling that will not go from packaged to shipped till Thursday or even Friday. Was going to cancel the order and place order with Newegg since they now have them back in stock, but ZZF does not allow cancellation on Packaged/Shipped orders.
Now starting to get concerned, I check resellerratings to read up on ZZF since I have not purchased from them in last 6 months or so. I find they their rating has been going down and find a good number of complaints.
One reoccurring tactic I find in the complains is that ZZF will flag orders of "in-stock" items as Packaged or even Shipped even though the item is out of stock and neither packaged nor shipped (in some cases the tracking number given is not found on UPS/FedEx site for days). The do this because once an item is flagged as Packaged or Shipped, you can not cancel the order. They never send out-of-stock notifications. Some customers on resellerratings had their "in-stock" order sit in Packaged/Shipped limbo for two weeks or more.
With this new information in hand, I call ZZF around 2:00pm PST and navigate through their phone system intent on not allowing you to talk to a live person or leave a message and was able to finally get a live person. I ask the customer support rep bluntly is the item in stock....after a good 5 minutes or so I find that the laptop is not in stock and will be back in stock Thursday.
I this point I am fuming and tell them to cancel the order. I get "But Sir, it will be back in stock tomorrow". I do not care if it was back in stock in the next 2 seconds, I do not do business with places that lie to me. She types a bit and tells me the order is cancelled. I say fine, but I want an e-mail confirmation it has. Was told they only send e-mail cancellation notices if you cancel the order online. Then I ask for her name and extension. She gave her first name but no extension.
After hanging up with ZZF, I check Newegg and placed order for the same laptop from them. Thursday morning I find that me so called cancelled ZZF order was just shipped out.
I was able to cancel the NewEgg order in time so I would not get two laptops sent to me (fyi...laptops are not refundable from both ZZF and NewEgg to prevent renters and such), but this type of behavior is unacceptable.
