Beware of IE7 Beta Scam

A scam email is asking users to click on a malicious executable file disguised as a bogus image link to download Internet Explorer 7 beta.

It was ostensibly from Microsoft.com, but good old AVG nailed it right away. 🙂

It's the only one that has gotten by my ISP in two years!

Your ISP is slackin'. That one's been in circulation for a month now.

Here's a writeup on another crafty one: Trojan.Kardphisher Pretty convincing in appearance, at first glance. They still have slightly-stilted English that gives them away, but they're trying

And another one: oh sure yeah, protect my infos

Aaaaand another one that I found last night: screenshot :camera:

Typically, the Trojan Horses I find in the wild are detected by less than 1/4 of the 31 antivirus scanners at VirusTotal.com, which is part of the reason I'm such a strident promoter of non-Admin user accounts for a proactive layer of defense, as well as SRP if possible. No signature updates required.

Why would you click a link about IE7 beta when the full version has been available for a long time now?

I got that email and I thought the same thing. I am already using IE7
