Beware: Disturbing ATM cash machine scam

This is older than VHS cameras and 900Mhz cordless phones.

But yeah kinda scary. ATMs tend to have lot of cameras though, it would be hard to pull off now I think. Whenever I use an ATM I look around to see if it looks tampered with, but probably not really enough to tell as they're all made differently so that little card reader just looks like it's part of the ATM.

Since I switched to a CU that is conveniently located I tend to take out money right at the bank now instead of ATMs. Probably less chance of a bank one being tampered with as I'm sure the staff upkeeps then more.

I wonder if people born yesterday know how to spell were. Probably not. They haven't had time to learn Engrish.

You really think I added the apostrophe? We're you born yesterday and completely unaware of mobile on-screen keyboards with auto-correction? SwiftKey did it again.

We've had a big issue in my area with ATM skimmers. They just caught some dude who was doing it on a large scale:

Edit: Wrong copy & paste, here's the right link:

He'd basically dress up in a disguise and attach a card skimmer that also contained a pinhole camera. He had self-storage units full of that crap. The system works well since banks & credit cards usually reimburse you for lost moola, so he got away with it to the tune of $5 million dollars before getting caught. And I'm sure this is the same idea as roaches - if you see one, there's five more in the same area doing the same thing.

This is something that is done frequently in Thailand. I don't even use random ATM machines. Only use ATM machines that are connected to a large bank and you should be good.

There was a huge rash of gas pump skimmers when the "bad guys" found out that most gas pumps use the same key. This allowed them to install the skimmers on the inside of the pump leaving no visible device.

Nice trolling. 😛

As the the OP:

I don't think I've ever used an ATM not attached to the wall of a bank. Thats not to say its safer but I haven't been taken yet and I've never noticed a slot that wasn't physically molded into the front fascia of the ATM.

There's nothing stopping the scammer from making an entire fascia that goes over the old one. They could even make a display and PIN pad that complains of a "temporary problem" after the victim enters his / her PIN..

I wonder why people would go through all this trouble to rig ATMs to collect credit card data when there is abundance of Nigerian Princes who are willing to give away their fortunes to us.

Just makes no sense.😕
