If you can hallucinate, which would be seeing false images with your eyes, what would it be if your ears "hallucinated"? I don't want to sound like an idiot, because I think hallucinate is technically referring to a visual context. I guess I'm looking for the technical word for your ears playing tricks on you.

the term "hallucination" is appropriate for any of the senses, not just vision, IIRC.

Spamela is right.

hallucination

read

"Perception of visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, or gustatory experiences without an external stimulus and with a compelling sense of their reality, usually resulting from a mental disorder or as a response to a drug"

Dude.. the first time I did acid, I had hardcore music going on in my head the whole time... and it was completely independent of the actual techno music that was going on.. It was like 2 songs at once but without them clashing - definitely a neato experience.

that's correct.

Some patients with schizophrenia, for example, may have auditory or visual hallucinations. Sometimes, they hear the devil telling them to do certain things.
