Oh the irony!

When they left the nascent US republic for Canada, one loyalist motto was "Better to live under one tyrant a thousand miles away, then a thousand tyrants one mile away.

Don't Canadians feast upon the plump corpses of their young to survive the winter? In that case I can understand why they're so protective.

Another victory for the "Won't anyone think of the children crowd". sad. Pretty soon it will be illegal to even be within 50 yards of a child that isn't your own in Canada.

it should be illegal to talk to a Canadian of any age lest they inflict harm your grasp of the English language or corrupt your position on maple syrup.

From TFA:

At a 2006 trial on two sexual luring counts, the judge called Craig Bartholomew Legare's actions "despicable and repugnant," but said that since he had no intention of ever meeting the child, there was no crime. Legare was acquitted.

The Supreme Court said the judge from the first trial applied the law too constrictively, leading to the acquittal. Thursday, the Supreme Court ordered Legare to face a new trial under the new criteria.

That's akin to "we couldn't convict him under the law, so we're just going to reinterpret the law so that we can convict him". Apparently in Canada an acquittal can be thrown out.

What's not clear from the article are clear standards of what is ok and what is not. I suspect there are no such clear standards, which gives the authorities in Canada the right to charge anyone they feel like, pretty much.

No, this won't be abused at all.

I just assume that all of you are over the age of 21.

It's not my responsibility to parent you or censor myself because some idiot let their child spend time on a forum frequented mostly by adults.

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your point of view), this could lead to the mass bannings of all Canadian IPs from all message boards, Youtube, social networks, etc, until things are clarified.

On the other hand, I doubt they are going to go through the trouble and expense of extradition over a harmless conversation. It would make Canada look like a backwards and repressive regime kind of like North Korea.
