Better Spell Checker For Firefox

While it has improved over the years, the dictionary with Firefox really stinks. I use this to correct words that misspell, because I was a C student in the one language that speak. What I resort to is typing the misspelled word in the FF search window, and having DuckDuckGo come up with word that FF fails to give as a hint. So can I replace the FF dictionary with a better one? Would this be an add-on, assuming it exists?

Yes, I remember writing a post, and it underlined a word in red, so I right clicked it and went to "Spelling Suggestions" to switch it to the correct spelling, then realized that the word it switched it to wasn't even correct and meant something completely different. Now I wonder if I spelled the word correctly in the first place, and it just didn't have it in it's dictionary (trying to find the post, I think it was on this forum recently and started with a "d").

This changing of the word happens to me all the time on my android. It drives me crazy because I don't notice it. When I do, I can't correct it to the right word with the spelling I want. But wrong forum for the Android.

Aha, turns out the word was "decipher", and my best guess of how to spell it was "deceifer". When I typed "deceifer" into Duckduckgo or Google it knew that I meant "decipher" right away and even redirected my search to the correct word, but Firefox only gave me the spelling suggestions deceiver and deicer (deicer? what? is that pronounced dee-sur?). It looks like "decipher" was in the dictionary, but you have to creatively figure out that you need to replace "f" with "ph" or "ei" with "i" to even get it to show up in the spelling suggestions. :awe:

Good rating as far as add-ons go, and a site (dictionary.com) that I have found helpful many times.

I edited the title of the thread to Spell Checker, because that's all I am looking for.

I checked out the Dictionary.com link. A lot of negative responses. I guess it's a love or hate relationship. Also another complaint is the privacy policy. I'll check out details another day. I guess they have to monetize the add-on. I'd rather pay $1-5 if it worked well and I didn't have to give up my privacy. Makes me think of the add-ons I use, and don't pay for.

I am familiar with Dictionary.com's Android app, so I assumed their atrocious privacy policy would also be in effect here, and it sure is. Other users have mentioned this, but it bears repeating. If you use this extension, here is what you are giving them:

* Your IP address.
* Unique identifier which tracks your installation
* Your geographic location.
* The URL of the PREVIOUS web page you visited before visiting their site.
* Words you look up (of course).
* And so on.

And they share everything with other parties.

I would love to ask this person how this differs from every other website on the planet!
Seriously, I know some people genuinely want to keep themselves safe online. But then there are some people who have no clue what the word Internet even means. I suppose, since they didn't get that dictionary app, they won't be looking it up, lol!
