better pc for SETI ?

I have a northwood 1.6 right now and i like the way it crunches SETI. I want to build a secondary machine just to crunch seti for cheap. The main points here are quickness in crunching and COST. I was thinking a celeron 1.7 or maybe a Tbird 1.4 or similar XP proc (1600 or so). 256 PC2100 DDR and like a 5-10gig HD. My question is which system would be better strictly for SETI a celeron 1.7 or XP1600 or say a tbird 1.33/1.4 any comments would be appreciated, thanks - Mark

I would go for an XP processor an ECS k7s5a Mobo and a stick of PC2700 Ram ( more likely to run cas.2 )
XP1700+ ~ 3 1/2 hours pr wu.

The Pentium4-based Celerons aren't strong on intensive computing. I would go with the AthlonXP arrangement. If you don't want to overclock then consider the Asus A7N266-VM, a quality microATX board with onboard video, onboard LAN, excellent onboard sound (same as the fancy nForce2 boards have, in fact). It's very affordable and would probably turn out typical WUs in around 4 hours. I have 20 at work running Win2000, Crucial PC2100 and Antec power supplies, very stable systems indeed.

thanks for the response guys. i know seti is more ram intensive and cpu intensive, so hd rpm speed shouldnt play much into work unit time, correct? thanks again - Mark

I have a 30gig i need to RMA so i figure i can get a cpu for about $50 and some ram for about $35 ( i havea p4 board ill most likely trade for a socketA board) so it should be a nice box for less than $100 : ) I'm an active trader on the forum here so it should be fine. I'll let you guys know how it goes. thanks again

when i had my p4s333 and crucialpc2100 i could run my 1.6@2.4 all day long rock stable.

But now i have a p4b266 with OCZ PC3200 and i cant get past 2239mhz and its not stable at that speed.

I have a new motherboard on the way, so hopefully i can run the ram at higher speeds.

Again OT.

The 327 is one of my all time favorite Chevy engines. We had a '67 Chevy station wagon with a 327ci 4 barrel, and that thing would move. 😀 I have a '67 Belair with a 283ci 2 barrel in the garage. I was planning on restoring it, but the frame is too far gone. 🙁 So I'm going to pull teh 283 and look for a vehicle (S10 truck or '66/'67 Chevelle maybe) to put it in. 🙂

Now I've got to go to FS/FT and see what the specs on that 327 are. 🙂

XP's are definately better at crunching SETI, my XP1800+ is faster than a 2.0Aghz Northwood I have running at work, and I do more on my home PC too!

Added to that the P4 Celerons are r-e-a-l-l-y slow at SETI!:disgust:

I can't remember WU times exactly but my mates S370 Cel 1.1A@1.46GHz was faster than 1 of the OcUK guys with a P4 Cel @2+GHz!
If anyone wants times I'm sure I could dig out the thread

Btw if you're gonna buy an XP & a mbrd which can choose multipliers I recommend getting a XP1700 Tbred ,many of the B core version of these hit well over 2GHz!😀

I've got a 1.6a and P4B-266C combo with Crucial PC2100. I was running it at 2208 (138 FSB) but it's not 100% stable there. I'm running it at 2128 (133 FSB) right now and it's rock solid. I'd like more but to be honest I don't *need* it right now.

BTW - I had a '70 Nova Super Sport 350 with a 4-speed & 12-bolt. I miss the car but I don't miss the days of having my hair in rear end fluid. 😉

If you're just wanting to run seti and nothing else on it you don't need good video or anything like that, pop in your favorite linux distro and this will crank out around 4-5 WU's per day for $200.

just switched to commandline version of seti on my p4 with seti driver. seems like it will work alot faster than the gui
