better option for LAN server

Just wondering what would be the best way to go for a home server. It will prob run ClarkConnect 3 Home version in gateway mode, or some other Linux disto configured as router/firewall/server.

And yes I realize that in a perfect world my firewall box should do that and nothing else, but my world is not perfect.

what will work better, dual slot 1 mobo with a pair of P2 350/400 cpus, 512 pc100--or a single socket A prob 1gig cpu again with 512 mb but it would be DDR.

server will be used as central storage for mp3,photos, and some vid files, 6 comps on the LAN connected thru a cable modem.

I don't think there will be any benefit of running smp, given your planned usages.
I'd go with the more powerful single processor and higher bandwidth ram in your example.

agree, you need the highest IO you can. two processors won't help much here.

would the picture change if the dual setup has SCSI to speed up the disk function, or is more about the memory ?

I am going out on a limb and guess you were talking about an intel BX board with the dually, and using the onboard SCSI controller. It won't really improve your situation over an ata100 disk on the other board. The network interface will be the clog point.

yes, it would be a BX chipset, or VIA Apollo Pro 133A..old school stuff.

the reason I was considering a dual is somewhere in the ClarkConnect info they said a dual setup would be better than single cpu. prob talking about current generation stuff tho.
