I have an NForce 3 Motherboard and I'm not sure if I should continue using Norton's or just use the NVIDIA Firewall that somehow optimizes the motherboard's hardware

hmm...i think nvidia may be refering to something else by use of the term "firewall" in relation to an nforce mobo. it beats the heck out of me how a firewall could optimize a motherboard...whats this nvidia thing called? i'd stick with norton over something that apperently you nor i have ever heard of. i want a second opinion though, since i have no idea what this nforce "firewall" thing is.

its a software program that works in conjunction with a hardware firewall apparently built into the mobo

I'd give the Nvidia firewall a try, assuming you can figure the thing out.

I'd use the NVidia one too... like I use the Firewall i my router, they usually work better than a software firewall such as Norton. :)

I have always read that a hardware firewall should be complemented by software firewall, just in case...
Also, most of the $100-150 SPI/NAT firewalls in routers are not true firewalls, so I have heard. Unless the 2 firewalls somehow conflict, I don't see why the 2 of them should not work together. I have a netgear 614 which is supposed to have SPI/NAT and I also use norton, which seems to work fine..

As far as Network concern, most serious users agree that Broadband users should use a combo of a Router?s NAT Firewall (which protect the whole Network) and a Good software Firewall that adds protection to each computer.

Why? See here: Basic Protection for Broadband Internet Installation.

Given that the NVIDIA Firewall is a Mobo thing, it is Not in completion with the Router.

It might be in competition with the individual computer?s software Firewall.

Personally I use the Norton Internet Security for one ?Big Reason?; it is a Firewall, Antivirus, Popup Buster, Ad -Buster, and more in one package.

My experience shows that One package is better and less troublesome for the TCP/IP Stack. Otherwise the Stack is intercepted by few programs each doing its own things and sooner or later it goes to the Moon.

However if software firewall slows down an important activity on your computer the NVIDIA Firewall might be a solution.

For a user of one computer (No network) the NVIDIA firewall + Windows XP SP2 Firewall should provide adequate protection.

:sun:

P.S. Using more then a Router NAT- Firewall and One software (or Mobo) Firewall serves No Real purpose. And it will increase the number of ?Computer Frozen? incidents, and the need to open each special port more than tow time.
