Better file recovery software than Recuva

I ran Dban DoD 3 pass on my 500GB Western Digital.

Hard Drive is over 6 years old. It has been running W7 for since release, so about 3 years now. I pwnd it with DBAN last night.

Recuva found 29666 files with the Deep Scan method looking at everything.

I see nothing leftover from the old HD.

The majority of files are from C:\Windows\Temp, etc - AppData/Roaming, etc, etc, etc.

I see none of my pro strat vids or home made pornos.

Is there a better file recovery software to test if DBAN is actually good.

I usually use Killdisk 1 pass which seems like enough.

I use Recuva and Eraser with 7 passes of US DoD, nothing is ever found. It's possible another piece of software might be able to recover more, never tested it though. You probably need to release your files from windows.

it's quite unlikely you'll be able to recover much.... even 3 passes with the DoD 5220.22-M standard will create unrecoverable sectors

Well I want to try.

What the heck is Eraser? Do you run this after a fresh install of the OS and after DBAN?

There are tons of equivalents to DBAN just so people reading my good topic will know.

- Killdisk - works 99% of the time on any IDE/SATA hard drive.
- DBAN - works 30% of the time - you may need to try older versions for IDE drives.
- Secure Erase - works 35% of the time - you will have to change bios settings for SATA drives.

Heidi Eraser - it's a GUI-based secure wipe that implements DOD 5220.22-M, Gutman method, and various other standards used by institutes and/or governments worldwide - all with varying levels of passes, writes, verification, etc.

On another note I just realized that you are the troll from other recent threads and am expecting the same behavior here that you exhibited recently - to essentially ignore any replies to your original question and denigrate those who want to actively participate in this forum to help others and have a enjoyable experience. FYI from me, just a regular forum member who's not a mod, so take it for whatever it's worth - or not, quite being a troll here and be civilized. You'll find yourself banned before you know it.

Then for whatever reason, DBan just plain skipped overwriting to some areas of the disk (i.e. it never touched the sectors/blocks where those files resided). Can't imagine why unless you put it into an external enclosure that isn't properly exposing the entire disk to the system, some issue with DBan reaching all areas of the disk.

You just need to use more passes, that will ensure that nothing can recover it.

Can you try an experiment? Do 10 passes and see how many files are listed as recoverable, I bet it will be fewer than what you see now.

PEBCAK. Eraser became a bit crap after version 5. CCleaner includes a wiper and is useful otherwise. Blank And Secure is good but aimed more at files than drives.
