I'm looking for a new proc for my Asus-Sli deluxe mobo and wanted to know which of these similarly priced items would be better. I'm going to be doing a lot of audio and video encoding and is why I wanted to go with a proc with a larger cache. With out overclocking I would guess that the x2 4400 would be the better choice but with overclocking would the opteron 165 be better?

Truth is up to you and how far you are willing to go. The Opty is a beefier chip and over clocks very well and high. I picked the 4400+ becuase I wanted to start from a higher clock so I didn't have to over clock it too high to get it where I want it... Even though there is no problem over clocking the Opty high I feel that it is alot of stress on it.

Thanks for the feedback. It looks like you had pretty good results overclocking the X2 4400. I think a lot of Opty 165 were getting a similar overclock so the 2 may be pretty even over all. The X2 4400 is a little cheaper at this point and I'll probably go that route. thanks

Optys got better chance to OC. they not fo sho. servers demand stability thats why stock is clocked SOO low. but still.
