The ATi I can get for about $40 less then the nvidia but, in your opinion, if you were to choose ... which one would you buy on a system like this:

AMD Athlon XP M 2400+ ( 2.2GHz )
1GB PC3200 Mushkin Blue
ect...ect..

?????

Thanks.

The hight $$ spent right now would be the 6600GT. I'm thinking of ordering an eVGA 6600GT agp off newegg. Then I can use eVGA's upgrade program if I get the extra $$ a bit later.

So, it sounds like the 6600GT is a better buy then.

I don?t know what $40 is in the overall price of the cards. But the 6600GT costs a little more than a 9800pro and is a little faster. If you look at HL2, the 9800pro is just as fast as the 6600GT. The 9800pro can also beat the 6600GT in UT4 ?

There are games where the GT will offer a good jump in performance over the Pro but there are lots of games where the GT offers no significant jump in performance over a 9800pro.

In the hardwarefr review ? 8 games ?

UT4
Farcry
Doom3
Splinter Cell
IL-2
Warcraft 3
Collin McRae 4
FIFA 2004

The 9800pro was faster in Collin McRae 4, Splinter Cell and Warcraft 3 depending on the settings. The 6600GT averaged 10 - 16% faster than the 9800pro at the different settings in those 8 games. The GT (AGP) costs ~15 -20% more (here in Canada). If you throw out Doom 3 it would be even less than 10% at the higher resolution. So the 9800pro can be as good value or better price/performance wise as the 6600 GT depending on the price.

What's the max resolution on your monitor? 6600GT is a faster card, but if you can't use the extra speed, you're possibly wasting the $$$. I would suggest looking at a few reviews that are out there at your max resolution.

Does the 6600GT have the advanced shaders of the 6800 series?

The 9800p does not . . . . Chronicles of Riddick uses this (and FC too, now i think) . . . although enabling it still might be a bit 'much' for the 6600 class . . . .

if i were to pick now - and the only choice was between the 9800p and the 6600GT, i'd pick the newer card. That said, my 9800xt is totally satisfactory for EVERY modern game i have thrown at it (Diii/HL2/Chron of Ridd:EfBB/Thief-DS/DE:IW/TR:AoD) - at max settings at 10x7 or 11x8. 😉

IF it were me again - really - i'd wait a bit for the 6800GT to drop in Price (hint: The NEW cores are due out this Spring)

the 6600GT is a new generation card, the 9800pro is last generation, meaning the 6600Gt will handle games better is the future.

the 6600GT is a future-proof card. DOnt get me worng the 9800pro, i think is a very good card, but its gettign outdated. If you do, for a reason get the 9800pro, buy one of the silencer fans and then flash the card into a 9800XT!
