Better business software than QB?

I run a small swimming pool cleaning and service company. Currently I run QB SimpleStart software for my billing (since 2005) and use it only to bill out parts and service, which, admittedly, it's pretty good at. I do NOT use it to keep track of expenses and whatnot (besides posting payments,) instead using Excel for that... I found QB to be absolutely unwieldy in that respect and just went to my own sheets.

I had a thread going over in the OS section about OE and other mail software and it got me to thinking... QB has already forced me to upgrade by discontinuing support to my old QB version, and I wasn't very pleased with that...

Is there a good, simple accounting and billing software that you are familiar with that might suit my needs better than QB? I figure I have about another year or two before QB sticks it to me again... It needs to be easy to use... my wife does Accounts Receivable for me...

I'm not at all familiar with it, but you could give GnuCash a try. It's free, so all it'll cost you is some time. FWIW, I know a guy who does Linux server installations, and he still uses QuickBooks for his business :^D QB is the standard, but you never know. Your specific needs may be met by GnuCash, and you have the time to play. Alternatively, maybe you could setup a spreadsheet to do what you want. You have the time to get things polished.

But you can try Microsoft Money for Business.. but I wouldnt touch that with a 10 foot pole,, just stick with quicken man,,, my dads used quicken since the 80's and was one of first people to do home banking online in the 80's ....

Why you trying to fix something that is not broken? Its like doing a OS reinstall for no reason ?

I'm going to bump this thread back up... I have been running QB Pro 2012 now, since the OP, but I've had about enough of QuickBooks. To make matters worse, a friend of mine in the same industry, using QB'10, is, true to QB form, is forcing him to spend another $200 to upgrade to QB'13 at the end of May... the icing on the cake is I can't even get his to function correctly (simple things like emailing invoices.)

I'm going to take a look at gnucash, but does anyone else have any suggestions?

I've been experimentally trying out Wave.
You might take a look at it (free).
Wave makes everything extremely simple, but I'll continue dual QB+Wave for awhile longer before completely changing over.

I've had some success with GnuCash, I recommend giving it a try. I found the learning curve to be a little steep, but I knew nothing about business accounting practices at the time, either.
