Better budget video card than GF3 ti200

Is there a better video card for the same or less money than a "GAINWARD/CARDEXPERT GeForce 3 Ti200 64MB (NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti 200 GPU), Power Pack Golden Sample, ( 4ns. 64MB DDR. ). TV-Out" for $74.00? This is my first time building a gaming machine. I have absolutely no idea about video cards.

electronics 4 life

use the latest cat series from the ati website, not the drivers from the cd. Also make sure you clean out your registry and nvidia folder of all nvidia referecnes.

actually, something new is out to clean your system of nvidia drivers- it's called "detonator destroyer"

good luck

I believe that you are building a fresh rig??? If so ignore my advice about doing a clean install😉

A 9100 not 9000....

Thank you for the registry advice. If the other parts come first or if I have to trouble shoot, some nividia drivers may end up in the mix.

I've had two 128MB 9100's and they were both bios locked. I altered the bios clock speed to overclock them, the memory really sucked. I also had the exact same GF3 you're talking about and it overclocked to 250/520. I liked the GF3 Ti200 better and if you compare it to a crappy overclocking 9100 64MB version, I would say that they are close to the same speed. If you were to get a 128MB 8500 that hits 300/300 than you would be much faster, but that costs alot more money. I'll go against the grain and definately recommend the Gainward GF3 Ti200 4ns based on personal experience.

Plus you can solder a jumper on that particular GF3 and turn it into a Quadro DCC and back again at will.

The 9100 is a trimmed 8500. Take account of the great overclocking in the Gainward card, or the superiority in nvidia drivers in compatibility.
9000 looks modern but performs weakly. Look around www.digitlife.com for their 3digest, you will find it near the bottom of the comparison charts.
Take note that if you want to play games that aren't current, or benchmark favourites, compatibility can drop off fast. Wander around Rage3D forums to get an idea of Radeon compatibility.

I had a Gainward GeForce 3 Ti200 128 Mb

it's speeds from the factory were set at 200/450, aren't the regular Ti200s set to 175/400? But here are my benchmarks with this card and comparing to other cards I just got

core/memory

Gainward GeForce 3 Ti200 128 Mb
175/400: Flyby, 48.99 Botmatch, 34.58 6475 3D marks
200/450: Flyby, 55.96 Botmatch, 38.54 6721 3D marks
210/480: Flyby, 58.96 Botmatch, 39.90 6991 3D marks
240/500: Flyby, 65.61 Botmatch, 42.73 7354 3D marks

Sapphire Ati Radeon 9500 64 Mb
276/270: Flyby, 97.36 Botmatch, 41.85 9026 3D marks

PixelView GeForce FX 5200 128 Mb
250/500: Flyby, 82.06 Botmatch, 45.03 6985 3D marks

I'm kinda amused that my Ti200 clocked to Ti500 speeds beat the GeForce FX in 3DMark2001SE

I use:
Athlon 1800+ (not overclocked)
Shuttle AK35GTR
1 Gb Samsung PC2100 DDR

I'll be able to add a Sapphire Ati Radeon 9500 Pro to the list of tests soon I get this card on Tuesday.
The clock speeds of my Radeon 9500 64 Mb was reported by Rage3DTweak. I thought it was supposed to be 275/275?

But as you can see from my GeForce 3, it seems to be very overclockable. I haven't tried it higher than 240/500 yet.

A review from Dec.,1,2001. THat's a 2.5 year old review. ATI has made tremendous strides in driver improvement and compatibility since then. In the spring of 2002 ATI?s drives made almost a 20% jump in performance alone.

Digilife .. I generally like their reviews but sometimes they are off0base. They put up some large AGP charts with and half the cards (ATI) are old reviews with old drivers against Nvidia cards with newer drivers because they?re too lazy to redo the charts.

The ATI 9100 at stock speeds (250/230) will be a lot faster than a stock ti200 (10-15%). If the ti200 overclocked to it?s max might just equal the 9100 in performance, but then you can overclock the 9100 ? see ?

SAPPHIRE RADEON 8500LE and Inno3D GeForce4 Ti200 differ by only $3 in price. But the first one features DVI output onto an LCD display and, moreover, it's the unrivalled leader of our today's test session both: in speed and picture quality in 3D applications. These two graphics cards used to belong to high-end products, but now their price is quite affordable. They both support pixel and vertex shaders, have well debugged drivers and reveal no problems at work.

Personally, instead of buying a new "old" card like the Gf3 Ti200, I'd rather buy a used card that's more recent like a GF4Ti4200.

4200 is a great card. Some of the deals I?ve seen on 4200?s are amazing. Up here in Canada we haven?t seen any deals on the 4200 like I?ve seen online in the US. If you don?t get one of those amazing deals, at NCIX.com the lowest priced 4200 is about $140US which is about double the price of the ATI Sapphire 9100 at $69US.

newegg.com is offering

a retaill

asus 4200 128mb 8x agp 4200 for $135.

It comes with morrowind and some others.

If i wanted to downgrade I would consider it.

I'd grab something like an MSI GeForce4-Ti4800SE (GeForce4-Ti4400 AGP 8x) and then overclock it to at least GeForce4-Ti4800 levels or beyond. This card rocks!🙂

What does the 4200 have to do with my post... ???? .... I was comparing to a ti200.

except you obviously didnt read that post and the quote very well. he claimed the 9000 beat the 4200. i told him he was wrong. you went crazy.

What post are you referring to? No one that I can see in this thread claimed a 9000 was faster than a 4200. Someone said a 9000 was faster than a ti200 - a completely different card than the 4200.

The only card he should even be considering is the 64MB Ti4200 at this pricepoint. There's no comparison between it and the other cards mentioned.

the cheapest ti200 i could find at newegg was a gainward for $75

the cheapest 8500le i could find at newegg was $70

the8500 is a better card than a ti200.
