She's one of the good ones. I also really like Eric Berger. Their whole games and social commentaries I could live without.

Oh for sure, they have more in-depth technical writers that really nail it when it comes to just overall writing + detail. Eric is great, and I also really like Lee Hutchinson (often physics-heavy topics), and there's another I can't recall or find right now with a quick browse of articles, but his focus is geological science.

Yea, I like Beth's articles. I like Ars in general. It's one of the few sites I go to to read, as opposed to following random links on reddit or whatever.

The problem is when you can't differentiate their news reporting from social commentary. They're usually not too bad, but at times, it's very easy to pick out sentences/remarks that do not belong in a professional news article.

There is an obvious slant for news reporting there, but it's also usually expected more of some writers than others. But it's not as heavy of a slant as techdirt, that's for sure. Ars isn't a place you really go to when you want general slant-free news reporting. They don't separately label News and Opinion articles, and they often mix together. But it's not really a news site, they have a generally specific market. I read some of the general pieces not to get the news but to get a different take, from a different angle.

Well, the weird thing is that I've always looked at Ars as more of a tech-oriented website, and sure, the tech sector tends to be more left-leaning, but... I guess I just expect more from them. To be clear, it's not so bad that I can't read the articles without feeling indoctrinated or anything close to that, but honestly... I just don't want to see it. When I start seeing opinion mixed in, how can I trust that what I'm reading hasn't been cherry-picked, etc.?

Honestly I don't consider Ars overall to be truly left-leaning, though they are a little of course. Rather, I think they are just decidedly tech-leaning, which just so happens to share some causes with the left. I mean, Net Neutrality shouldn't be a political issue. It is only because the right is putting corporations ahead of individual citizens; the inclusion of temporary personal tax cuts was merely a way to sell the corporate tax cuts. It's temporary because when the quite likely democrat-majority government has control at the time of expiration, they should be unlikely to renew it. Hopefully have completely rewritten tax laws to make that a non-issue, but if they don't, they'll get significant blame and give the right a strong chance to rebound.

They are also very pro-science so expect articles that support mainstream science like climate change, vaccines and evolution.

Some people can mistake those topics for being “liberal” instead of “science”.

Doh. I meant to say something to that effect as well, but I see I forgot.

Yes, the science aspect is one of the main reasons I read the site routinely, they have talented writers in the physical science fields.

The way I'd put it politically is to say democrats just tend to be pro-science, while science coverage is, well, pro-science.

On a tangent, I read that article the other day & really want some of those pills. I've got a messed-up stomach (SIBO) & would love to get more research done on it, as there's virtually no research going on because there's not a big enough recorded affected group to warrant any real medicine development. But I grew up with massive stomach pain pretty much daily & would be really interested to see the data from that pill, jokes aside.
