Getting laid off! :|

1 week notice and 2 weeks of severance pay. My last day is Tuesday. Eliminating my position due to budget cutbacks.

Not sure wtf I'm going to do now.

Sorry to hear this, Pontifex. 🙁 Companies always do this crap around the holidays; I.E. end of the year. *shaking head*

Get your resume updated and get it out there quickly. Ironically enough, after the holiday "firing period" many companies are looking to replace those they fired!

Maybe Company XYZ fired a Tech Support Guy b/c he was there 4 years and about to be eligible for a big raise due to company policy or something like that. Seriously; happens all the time! You could get in on the ground floor.

Keep swinging that bat, man. You'll hit something. 🙂

wow...i just saw a job listing that said career advancement opportunities included telemarketing and customer service...

yeah its a bad year. my wife got laid off not to long ago and 2 friends of ours did also.

it really sucks.

I've never been laid off before, so what kind of services/support is there available to me to help me get back to work?

Heh. Time to revisit that gun store idea I had for ya, man 🙂

Seriously, though... That sucks! Sorry to hear it.

yeah, i would love to do that, but don't you have to have money to start a business? also, with our president elect, i'm not too confident in how well that market is going to do.

You should be able to collect unemployment benefits, and continue your health coverage through the COBRA program. As far as help getting a job, I'm not sure what to tell you there. Get your resume up to date and start applying everywhere you possibly can. Keep an eye out for career fairs in your area.

Best of luck man,

R

You should get severance pay, and you also should be able to receive unemployment checks for a certain amount of time iirc.

yeah, 2 weeks worth of severance pay. $1,320. woohoo...oh, and that's before taxes.

In the same boat, buddy. Mine's not a layoff, but a revoking of a job offer to continue what I'd been doing for the last 1.5 years full time (just graduated-- was an internship), but I'll still be out on my ass. I did apply elsewhere though and got an offer from another company originally slated to start 1/1, but it was pushed back to 2/1 at the earliest.

I'm just going to do some independent stuff (have 4 web-design contracts for next month) until I find something more steady. I just hope the flood gates open in January.
