Ever walked into a store like CompUSA or Bestbuy, and watch ppl drool over those PCs in the aisle? Then the worst part comes when they talk to a sales person who tries to sale them a PC that is totally overkill for them?!?! That bothers me so much cuz these innocent ppl are getting ripped off.

I was in the cdr aisle, and this very confused couple were asking this old dude who worked there the difference between a celeron and p4 PC. well, i didn't catch the whole explanation, but he did mention that the p4 was much better (i think he was trying to sell her one of the p4 on display). anyways, her bf/hubby kicks in and asked the difference between an athlon and p4. he asked what the difference was, and the sales person must've given them a run around. the guy said he heard from a friend that the athlon was much faster, and it was cheaper somewhere else than the p4 the salesman was trying to sale them. anyways, the salesperson got annoyed and walked away, and i thought he had him there. then all of a sudden the woman called him back and told the dude she wanted the p4 on display.

now i didn't hear too much cuz i didn't wanna be nosy, but i think they paid too much for the system, when they could've gotten the athlon somewhere else for much cheaper. honestly, i think the p4 was overkill. im sure the only thing they wanted the PC for was to surf, write papers, and maybe games for their kids.

i'm sorry, but these stores really take advantage of customers. it was funny when a salesperson tried to sell me some cdrs, but i told him i found them cheaper some place else. anyways, this bugs me so much, and i am so tempted to go "undercover" and go back and act stupid and ask about PCs. ask the normal questions such as how much RAM i need and how much HD space, and see if he tries to sell me something that is overkill. then out of the blue bust out some PC lingo, that maybe he won't even understand.

god this kills me!!! is it just me or does anyone else feel this way?

yea it kills me too. but i try to stay out of it, because i figure it's not my problem. although it would be fun to go undercover like you said... maybe we should start a sting operation and mail the tape to 20/20 or something :)

Of course they're like this...

I had a manager really pissed off in there one time...

This older couple were looking at an emachines and only wanted a celeron (they just wanted to surf that's all)

So what does the salesman suggest? Oh hell get a athlon 1ghz. Needless to say overhearing after the salesman leaves, I told them that it was way overkill and the guy was just bs'n em. That's when the guy came back and I got in trouble (oh who cares though. Damn poor innocent people getting ripped off :()

people should do research before buying something.

Whats odd is the best buy employees dont get paid commmision.- they just want to sell whats in stock.

Oh well, they really should do some research before going and buying something from there - it's their own fault.

I agree, they are salespeople and it is thier job to use tactics and sell their products. Furthermore, if you always suggest the cheapest alternative to your customer, you will be considered a bad salesperson and probably get fired. If you don't do your research you get ripped off. This applies to any product, not just electronics at BB.

you cant blame ppl when it comes to buying something their not familiar with. it's the job of the salesman to atleast be honest, and that's why their working there, helping the customer choose the best system for their needs.

so many times i have friends who ask me which PC to buy. I tell them honestly that the P4 with the DVD drive isn't what they need for something such as writing a term paper on Word. I try to save them money, and not tell them to go overboard with scanners, zip drives, and a 32M video card.

That's like going to buy a car. I don't know much about car, and i know damn well the salesman there is just tryig to sell me something so he can get his commission. research wise, i just go with the flow and i can only research so much about cars. for PCs, some of the tech sites out there go overboard with their specs also. i've seen one where they recommended 256megs of ram just for simple web browsing. to me that's overkill if i were going to use my pc for browsing and writing papers.

really, you can't blame someone who's innocent. what's the point of bestbuy hiring someone to help customers cuz we know ppl will always have questions regardless of their research if any.
