I think Chris Cornell leaving Soundgarden to form Audioslave was a good thing, although they are not all that different. Him breaking off from Audioslave to go solo was kinda a meh decision tho.

cornell went solo for a little after soundgarden (who are way better than audioslave, btw)

now cornell breaks audioslave.. bastard :|

Gwen Stefani, leaving No Doubt.

It makes me cry tears fitting for Alice in Wonderland every time I see/hear her now. You're almost 40 dear, not a 20 year old sex symbol.

Sting leaving the Police was a bad move for both I think. He has done well commercially but his writing was alot better with the Police. His solo stuff tends to be boring and/or contrived.

Tarja Turunen leaving Nightwish 🙁

Her solo album is pretty good, some incredibly talented players on it. And she was fired.

Her solo album is really good, I agree. Nightwish just isn't the same without her.

I was gonna say Pete Best... but it looks like, from the Wiki article, he was fired and didn't leave on his own decision... so nevermind. 😛

Not sure if these truly fit what you're looking for but:

Kenny Rogers leaving The First Edition, seemed to work out well for him.

Same for Lionel Ritchie and the Commodores.

Jason Newstead - Metallica 🙂
Jason Newstead - Echobrain 🙁
Jason Newstead - Ozzy 🙂
Jason Newstead - Supernova 🙁

Some of those that you say were bad were not necessarily the singer's decision. David Lee Roth was fired.
Definitely the best American rock band ever,

Whoaaaa there buddy.

😛
Most influential American rock band? Check.
One of, if not THE most influential guitar player ever? Check.
(EVH not only kick-started the shredders, but has all sorts of innovations in equipment, too. )
Sold almost 100 million albums world-wide? Check.
Two different albums over 10 million? Check. (and these albums were from back in the day when sales really meant something)
Most #1's on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart? Check.
Multiple Grammy nominations and winning a Grammy? Check.
DLR widely considered the greatest rock Frontman (not singer)? Check.

Doing all this with, mainly, two DIFFERENT singers? Yep, greatest American rock band.
What American band has done it better? Metallica? Aerosmith? Those are the only two that even can be in the conversation, and IMO they fall short. Hell, just search Youtube for "Eruption" and see how many kids are still trying to play it. Don't see too many trying to learn Aerosmith solos. 😉
damn, you got to let the 80s go man, seriously. Most of us have forgotten the 80s gladly.

Hmm I dont know many

Scott Raynor - 1998 left the band just after their dude ranch cd hit and soon after great commercial success....which was very bad for him but of course blink is much more poppish now which is probably an overall bad thing but they make a lot more money too, who knows.

I don't agree with the CCR analysis. John Fogerty was CCR. The other guys were just sit in musicians. The breakup of CCR had nothing to do with continuation of hits.

Brothers too, no?

But you are right. John Fogerty is CCR. He was not legally allowed to use that name anymore, and in fact got sued by his former label for "sounding too much like CCR". Hmmmm, he wrote the songs, sang the songs, and played guit-fiddle on all the songs - crazy that he would sound like CCR, except that he was/is CCR.

At first I thought Audioslave was cool but then any time they came on the air I found myself changing the channel sub-consciously like I do whenever Godsmack, Nickelback, Slipknot or ANYTHING involving Travis Meeks comes on.

Another one was Bruce Dickinson leaving Iron Maiden in the 90's which led to them releasing two steaming piles of albums. But it was all fixed when he re-joined in 1999. I was so happy that day, I felt like I was living in a cloud.

And on the flip-side, Iron Maiden getting rid of Paul DiAnno and asking Bruce Dickinson to sing (left Samson). Worked out great for Maiden. In fact, in an interview, founder Steve Harris has said without Dickinson, Maiden would have never been successful.
