best wireless router?

destrekor

how does this model perform?
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Linksys-...atOid/-12981/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

we are going to be getting a router that needs to have a far range. A neighbor is actually getting it for us and is going to split the cost of our monthly internet fee. So something needs to reach his house.
i figure anything MIMO should do the trick. But how well will it do that trick?
I am concerned about overall speed. currently my belkin 54g is quite slow, so as long as its faster than it (about 11mbps), then I shall be happy. The router will be placed on the floor below my room, pretty much directly underneath. So if I get anything under 20mbps I'd actually be very surprised and angered.
And our neighbor wont partake much in our network itself, just the internet. So, ideally he should get 5mbps.

any other suggestions? we are going to get it tomorrow.

Belkin PreN is another choice to look into. I have heard some reports of people getting 1600ft range with this baby. I read one consumer said he could get a strong signal anywhere on his five acres of land with it.

You do realize that that is theft of Service.

i once ran 11.5 miles with a cisco 4800 wireless bridge, granted that was with 26 db dishes and 1 watt amps ontop of a 80 foot tower at each end... ... what you want to look for is an ap/router with at least 30 mil/watts of tx/rx power preffrebly 100mil/watts, my network in my house is a monowall box out of my cable modem and a cisco 350 802.11b wireless ap though i have cat 5 wired to all my computers and just use the ap for my ibook and handheld and psp so speed over wireless isnt too big of an issue with me

bump any ideas?

im lookin at:
d-link di-634m 2xr
netgear rangemax
belkin pre-n

the belkin would be a last ditch effort though, simply because I already have the wireless card since it is true-mimo and figure it would work with the linksys 54gx2.... but the damned card wont install in the laptop.. damn belkin POS software/drivers

theft of service, whatever.... local isp wont know and this deal works out better for my neighbor and i.. he doesn't need full-blown internet, but internet will cost him the same, no matter if he goes broadband or not.. doesn't have a phoneline, period.. so $40 bucks or up is what he's lookin at... so we figure, he gets internet for cheaper, we end up gettin it for cheaper as well since he will split out bill.. isp won't know

but his house is maybe 20' away from ours, so the signal has to go through 2 walls, 20ft, and about 2 or 3 more walls... shouldn't any mimo be able to handle this? yet nothing is so far
his internal 54g in the laptop caught a glimpse of a signal in his house (using this linksys 54gx2 router).. but shouldn't we be able to do better? i don't think its even 100ft between the router and a client in his house...

Theft of service is still theft of service no matter how you rationalize to yourself that its ok.

im not saying its perfectly okay, just explaining the situation.... please dont crap on my thread.... i just need any suggestions/advice/help, personal experience with any of these routers in similar situations would be great

A good scientist must spend time on ?what if? too.

Therefore, if you are sold on MIMO you have to borrow, or get an easy Returnable one.

What if the MIMO would not cover the distance, or would end with very low bandwidth?

Then you are stuck because there is No Antennae or other Gizmos that would work with MIMO to extend the distance.

So you might be are better of trying Buffalo High Power with Good External Antenna.

Wirelessly Bridging Home / Network.

thanks.. but hmm, if using a non-mimo notebook card as a client, the client could get a signal, sure.. but since you cant mod the antenna on a notebook card anyway.. how would you make it so the client could make a signal for the upstream?
because, wouldn't the packets get lost in the air when sending a request packet to the router/internet?

If the Antenna on the source is a good Antenna and you recieve well it would work both ways.

:sun:

P.S Make sure that the arrangement is legal and your pal would not lose his ISP contract.

we're the ones sharing with him 😉

okay, so beyond that... is there specific models you would like me to try? and are available at bestbuy? the purchases have been made there, so it would be best if we could just return the merchandise and get something different, direct from them

If he doesn't need fast speeds, I see Orinoco GOld PCMCIA cards going like hotcakes on ebay because they have a port for an external antenna. Could check out one of those or let me know as I have a bunch.

I'd go with a Linksys WRT54G with a hacked firmware that lets you boost the power output. Then have the neighbor get a good card on hsi end also possibly with an external antenna to insure it will work well.

Free bump for you, I am in an apt complex and we have a group of neighbors wanting to share a business class DSL, I figure everyone getting the same equipment of high power router that can be used as bridge/AP would be good.

I am looking at MIMO too, how are their range when used with non-mimo G equipment? Can most of them work as AP nowadays?
