Depends on what you mean by "best?"

The best I've ever seen or used is the new Di Novo from Logitech. Just installed it yesterday and this thing works like a charm and screams quality! It comes with the MX900 mouse (the MX700 with a Bluetooth connection). Bluetooth is totally worth it. You don't have to mess with line of sight issues and the range is about 30' (meaning you won't run into issues with placement of the transiever).

But it is also the highest priced. I've heard you can get it for about $200 online, but expect $249 at local retailers...

If you have money to spend and want the slickest and best (with a killer warranty to boot), get the Di Novo. I don't think you'll be disappointed. I love mine!!!

probably a stupid question - in order to use a bluetooth based wireless mouse/keyboard, do you need to have bluetooth support in your mobo?

No. The bluetooth desktop kit from Logitech includes the Bluetooth transciever.

THat's part of the reason why it is so expensive. Online, you can get it for about $185.

Unless you have a laptop with built-in BlueTooth, the Di Novo is just a gimmick. The MX Duo has no line of sight issues either. I've ranged mine out to 40' with fresh batteries. And the MX Duo can be had for $50 or less if you check Hot Deals. 4x the price but not 4x the features.

Dude, I don't think that is possible. 40' is beyond bluetooth range and I guanrantee that is outside the spec of the regular wireless. According to Logitech's web page: "Q: What is the range can I expect from my cordless mouse or keyboard?
A: In general, the range should be up to 6 ft., with the exception of the TrackMan® Live?/SurfMan, which offer up to 30 ft on the High setting." This was in the support documents for the MX Duo on the Logitech website.

So you need to quickly box up yours and send it back to Logitech so they can figure ot what they did and duplicate it and sell it... please....

Also, Logitech clearly states that they recommend you DON'T use the built in bluetoth of a computer (or another manufacturers)...

Lastly, the DiNovo is a lot more than a gimmick. The keyboard is fantastic. If you haven't used one yet, I suggest you not speak about it.

I have an MX duo and have no problem with it at 25-30 feet away. Thats as far as I can get without walls which don't affect it that much because I use the muyltimedia controls from another room. Right now a box one of my daughter's toys came in is in front of the reciever so there are no line of sight issues. The MX duo uses radio.Bluetooth is indeed a gimmick until I can buy one peripheral and it supports all my other bluetooth enabled peripherals or when the throughput is enough to allow for bluetooth printers and scanners to be as fast as wired ones. I switched from a MS bluetooth desktop to a MX duo because it sucked. I also have a bluetooth enabled printer and phone which will not work off a single dongle which is supposed to be the great thing about bluetooth. You paid almost $200 for something that won't do anything my MX duo can't. If he wnts the best wireless Duo its the MX hands down. Don't try to justify your purchase by convincing someone else to waste their money.

Logitech MX duo

Firstly the MX700 Mouse is brillant! :) I find it really confortably and easy to use tracking is great! :) I don't play heaps of games, but it works fantastic in Freelancer and i would expect similar results from FPS games. :) I put the mouse back on the charger every night and have never found the batteries to run out even after a good 16hrs of almost contiunous use. ;) Note however you need to charge the mouse batteries a few times before the get charged properly, so the first couple of days they don't seem to last as long.

The keyboard that comes with it is a Logitech elite keyboard , which has lasted 6 months on the orginal batteries and still going strong. :) I don't use the extra buttons except the mute button and volume dial. I like the layout of it, and secondly it looks great! :) I am planning on making sure my next case is black and i will also get a black LCD screen in the near future to match. :)

I have the docking station/ receriver about 3 feet away from the mouse and keyboard and have never had any interference problems which have some times been reported.

I highly recommend this mouse and keyboard combo. I never thought i would spend so much on a mouse and keyboard , but i am really glad i did as i found it very impressive.

I'm not justifying a dang thing. I bought the keyboard/mouse combo I did because I had the money and wanted it. I liked the styling, What I WAS doing was calling Jpeyton out with a 40' claim. I've no doubt that those things can occassionally reach longer distances.. But it is NOT the norm, otherwise Logitech wouldn't claim 6' range as the expected norm. I've had a standard radio frequency setup in the past and had problems with it. A lot of the problems you might or might not have are dependent on the amount of interference from other electronic devices or even wireless setup (802.11b, etc.). Bluetooth does not experience as much interference with these things and is a bit more powerful than the standard radio frequency devices. That worked out great for me. But don't pitch anything over 10' on standard radio devices as the norm when they aren't. Just becuase it works for a few doesn't mean it will for everyone.

You are right about the MS Bluetooth setups though. The Logitech solution I have now replaced a MS Bluetooth mouse. It was very tempermental and often just lost connection with the trasceiver (when in use it would just stop...not after trying to wake up). MS has a fix posted on their web site for this so it is a known problem. The Logitech solution is much sleeker.

I also want to point out that the DiNovo is not the same as the MX Duo or MX Duo for Bluetooth. The keyboards are different and you might like one better than the other... I liked the styling and two piece design of the DiNovo. By all means, try the less expensive options and if they work for you, use them. But I feel the BEST solution out there is the DiNovo because *I* like it. YMMV.
