My friend just bought her first house, and her birthday is today.

I'd like to buy her some sort of "house warming gift", but am not sure what would be appropriate... my budget's pretty tight, so this will be a housewarming/birthday/Christmas gift. (!! :) ) Price range no more than $30-40. Any recommendations?

EDIT: Wine and a fondue set it is. Any suggestions for a good wine, $30 or less?

- Nice bottle of wine (for $30 I recommend a Trefethen Merlot or a bottle of Moet Chandon Champagne)

- An ex gave me a set of stainless steel trivets shaped like sea creatures that I thought were pretty cool. ~ $40

- Gift basket with fruits and stuff. Comestibles are always nice over the holidays.

Yep.

(Depending on what they already have for moving in) I've normally gone with a silverware set.

Great tips, thank you! amnesiac, she LOVES wine... I'll pick up a bottle after work today. I may get her a little fondue set or something, too. :)

Any other suggestions for wines $30 or less?

Any good wine that sells for around $30 - $40 can probably be found at Trader Joe's for $10 less. If they don't happen to have exactly the same wine, they'll have a good selection of wines as good or better than the one they don't carry. :)

Are you thinking red, white, or something else, like champagne/sparkling?

Red, please. And does Trader Joe's really carry an "expensive" selection of wines at such low prices?! Whew. :)

Bonny Doon Cardinal Zin

One of my favorite wines and fairly reasonable price-wise.

There are good rose sparkling wines (can't call them champagne, unless from that region) that you could buy, plus the idea that you buy something more permanent for the new household is a great idea, too. Like spend $20 on a moderate wine and also give this person something for the home like dishtowels or those whatchamacallits, those things I see women putting on wine glasses (little bobbles around the stem) to tell whose drink is whose. A bottle of wine is nice but ultimately it is ephemeral.

Kids these days all suck. Officemax didn't honor my order which consisted of 5 stacked coupons so I hate them now. My neighbor plays his bass too loud and I can't sleep. I got a speeding ticket for 85 in a 60, but everyone else was doing 85+ so why should I get the ticket. I like this girl, but she likes this other guy and I it sucks b/c I can't do anything about it. My job sucks. My life sucks. I hate everything.

Did I win best whine? Do I get the $30-40?

...oh its wine, not whine ;)

Costco has good prices on good wine.

My picks:

Trefethen Vineyards (merlot, cab, or chardonnay)
2000 Chateau St. Michelle Canoe Ridge Merlot

Or, you could get a bunch of really good, low priced wines. Bristol Farms actually has some great deals:

Bodegas Borsao (http://www.bodegasborsao.com/pages/primii.htm) $8.99
Leaping Lizard Chardonnay $9.99

Just a couple suggestions...most of my favorites are stored on my palm which is at home at the moment.

Quinta do Noval 2000 Silval Vintage Porto

One of the best ports for the price from the classic 2000 vintage, this is killer stuff! Declared only in very good years, Silval Vintage Port is made in the traditional way. Having spent 18 months in oak cask the wine is allowed to develop in the bottle, it will throw a deposit and need decanting.
