Hey guys,

Looking for the best 7800 series driver for CoD2. That is really the main game I am using right now. I would like to hear your experiences with various WHQL drivers.

I had just installed the 81.98's and it seemed to reduce my performance in CoD2.
I just finished running Driver Cleaner PE and still in safe mode. Just going to wait for an answer from you guys.

Thanks in advance.

Since IQ seems to be of little concern to you, I would suggest you enable the AF optimizations in your CoD2 driver profile.

Out of curiosity, why will you only use WHQL drivers?

Edit: I've never seen a benchmark comparing different driver versions for CoD2.

IQ is of little concern? Where did I imply that? The IQ is actually quite nice. Can I just go OT for a moment and ask you why you came to this conclusion? It seems like its out of nowhere..

Ok, back on topic. I ran Driver Cleaner PE and I installed 81.95WHQL's. Here is how it went:

I had 81.45's. Then I just installed the 81.98's on top of the old drivers. This was probably a mistake, but wanted to see what would happen. My framerate in CoD2 under identical settings that I was using with the 81.45's dropped dramatically on the order of 30fps lower than usual. So, I ran DC and installed 81.95's for now. I haven't had a chance yet to test the framerate. I will in a few minutes.

I may have jumped to conclusions somewhat but it's fairly well-known that there's somewhat of an inverse relationship between IQ and FPS among drivers. Sorry about any confusion.

That's weird about the FPS drop and there's no way that different driver versions will make that much a difference under normal circumstances. Let us know what happens with the new drivers.

New drivers still have low fps. borderline playable at 1024x768 2xAA 8xAF. Something is defo wrong here. Going to try the 81.85's again.

You mean third party drivers? I'll consider it if nothing else works.

Installed 81.85's again. Problem is gone. Framerates are up near 75 and do not drop anywhere near the low 30's like it was. Well, I guess I should have left well enough alone.

I have the 81.85's installed. It BSOD's with a nvp.dll (or whatever its called) on me, and then reboots in CoD2. It did this before I formatted, and afterwards too. I dont know why, other games seem to be fine. So I am going to update to the newest at some point today. So I would stay away from the 81.95's...

Newer isn't always better I guess. I'll stick with the 81.85's as they seem to fit my needs for CoD2. I'm going to get that 1.01 patch in a little while and give it a go.

Very interested in your CoD2 numbers from before and after the patch braddah :) @12x10 Q4 showed some nice pick-up on P4HT, so hopefully this title does too.

Let us know Keys how you fared with that patch. I installed it on my HT cpu and it smoothed things out more for me.

I would definitely look at the Xtreme G drivers (Tweaks R US). They are, hands down, the best drivers i have ever used. Based on my driver testing i would say that the 81.98's are the best. THe 82.12's are about on par with speed but have significantly lower IQ. The .95's are fine they are just slightly slower and older...IQ is the same.

Ok guys. All I'm sayin is WOW!!! (no, not world of warcraft).

81.85's 1024x768 2xaa 8xAF
CoD2 Brecourt in the ruins firing the MG at a close brick wall brings my fps down to 37.
A lot of muzzle flare, smoke, bulletmarks, brick and mortar chipping and sparks flying right in front of my face. So, there is a lot going on.

Installed the 1.01 Intel patch.
All settings same and in exact same spot doing the exact same thing.

Lowest my fps went was 51. THAT makes a huge difference for multiplayer gameplay.
I am ecstatic right now about this patch as it has done wonders.
Just walking around the map I am getting solid 80 to 90 fps, with minimal going on. Just scenery, fog, etc. etc. Befor I was in the low 60's avg.

So, I would endorse this patch fully. Gives a NICE big boost.

EDIT: endorse it that is, for HT P4 owners. Cant speak for dual CPU's or Dual core CPU's.

I know you said WHQL, but have you tried the 82.12 betas? I got a performance increase across the board.
