Anything cheap and tastes good. As a teen 15+, you will grow muscles on almost any meal supplement. If you (and your parents) are naturally lean I would go for whatever is on discount at GNC. If you want to explore on your own a good site/company isProsource and Nutrition Express. If you PM some information on your starting point and goals I can be more specific. But in general, a good diet, appropriate exercise regimen, and adequate rest preclude the need for supplements in the majority of teenagers. You can make very good progress without them.

To oversimplify.....

You only need enough protein to cover what is lost during your daily life and what is lost during exercise, and enough to build new muscle. Too much protein will bloat you and make you and everybody else around you that has a sense smell unhappy. Your body builds muscle all the time, so remember to spread it out during the day.

Ok, so what you really need alot of is carbs. You are burning a ton of calories at your age, and you need to replace tham so that your body doesnt cannabalize your muscles for energy. Eating the right amount of carbs will reduce your need for protein and spare you existing muscle tissue. OTOH, too much and you'll get fat....

So, to answer the question, Optimum and Designer are two well liked protein powders and can be had at any GNC. IMHO, Designer sits better in my stomach than Optimum does.

Very well said MrChicken! Designer is probably the best tasting powder I've tried. Nitrotech is pretty good too in the way of tastes, albeit overpriced. (I have a high gag reflex)

Weight gain, as weight loss, is nothing more than calories in vs calories out. To gain a pound a week you will need to eat about 500 more calories a day than your basal metabolic caloric intake. You can easily calculate that through a number of methods, just check the web.

Secondly, I would instead of recommending a protein powder, go with a MRP - meal replacement powder twice a day around your meals. That means you need eat five to six times a day. Whether you zig zag your calories or keep them static through the day shouldn't matter much for someone your age. Just eat!

Keep in mind though, that weight increase can come in three different forms - fat, the most prevelant; water, which you will gain since you need to start drinking more of it; and muscle, which at your age and assuming you haven't started a consistent workout regimen should be anywhere from 10-20 lbs a year - max (It will get even harder to gain muscle once you get close to your genetic peak).

Don't get hung too much with the brands at this point, though I would lean towards the more well know. I personally shop at www.thepowerstore.com . It has a good forum, cheap prices and the owner of the site knows what the hell he is talking about.

For starters change out all the soda you drink for Milk, thats the best thing you can do as far as fluids for weight gain. it's got plenty of protein in it.

I had the same problem when I was a teenager. You can eat and eat and not gain weight. People joke that you must have a hollow leg. My metabolism was like a mole's ;) I found that eating lots of pasta and adding a couple of slimfast shakes to my daily intake put my calories high enough to start building muscle mass.

i kind of have the same problem, i started working out about 8 months ago, and started taking protein shakes about 4 months ago, i went from benching 135 to 205 in about 5 months. but since then i havent been able to get past 205. i weigh 160 so i think i need to gain weight, but thats not really an easy thing for me. should i just get somet generic weight gainer in addition to the protein shakes? or should the weight gainer replace the protein shakes? TIA

If you want weight gainer, .... or gaining weight all you have to do is EAT A LOT. Also... if you can't stomach that much food, try a MRP (meal replacement powder) take that and eat a lot at the same time. Also, try creatine on top of that and you'll have amazing results.

I'd spend the money on real food. Eat 5 smaller protion meals throughout the day. It provides a better consistency of proteins and carbs throughout the day. You will gain weight through hard work and training. Remember numbers aren't all that. its how you look and feel. How old are you?

Working out hard you can gain weight fast. Squats is the fastest way to put on weight period.

eating itself doesnt seem to be doing the trick.... i eat a LOT, like 1/2 lb burgers with a huge plate of fries, 2 lb steaks, 20 dishes of sushi.... i almost always go to buffets for lunch, me and some friends once spent 4 hours at a buffet on their opening night.... they werent so happy with us....

koing - i'm 20, i work out 4 days a week. monday and thursday is bench, incline, tri's and back, tues and friday is shoulders, bi's, legs and abs. i usually skip the squats in favor of the leg press and angled leg press, feels better for my back.

i'll look into those weight gainers, i'd like to stay away from creatine though. so should i take the weight gainers on top of the protein? is it an every day thing? do i take it before or after i go to the gym? thanks again.

What's wrong with the creatine? And please don't qoute one of those bogus French medical studies or a bunch of hype riled up by the idiots at ESPN. Creatine is found naturally, and has yet to be proven to have any long term side effects other than a chance in some folks to make them dehydrated, which can be remedied by additional water.

Creatine also causes your muscles to store more water in them (making them look bigger) and after you stop using Creatine, the water also goes away. Thus, some of your friend's "gains" also seem to disappear.

you'll gain weight when you start eating even when NOT hungry.

try eating chicken, tuna and other high protein meals 6-8 times a day. add a protein drink after workouts and your set.
