Be cautioned though, there is no such thing as unlimited b/w and unlimited space unless you have unlimited money. You are much better off figuring out what specs you actually need and buy some space from a reputable reseller. You can find all sorts of reviews on WHT, as well as many offers and discounts from companies.

As stated, unlimited space and transfer don't exist. If a host is offering 100gb/transfer and 500gb/disk space a month for $5 they are overselling. You will not reach that amount of transfer because your hosting contract probably has a clause about if you cause undo strain on the server they will shut you down/charge you more. This is why you don't look for who has gb of transfer per dollar, any price they quote you will be total bullshit.

Look for a quality host that doesn't have a history of screwing their customers, webhostingtalk is definitely a good place to read reviews. I use asmallorange and like them, but I can't comment from firsthand experience on 1and1.

I'm a big fan of Host Gator, so I'd recommend them. I don't use a lot of space or BW, though, so I can't say how good they are about using a lot of resources. I got sick of jumping around cheap hosts that were recommended around here then sucked shortly thereafter, but since I've had HG I haven't had any issues.

I have been using Network Solutions for a few years. Initially I had a windows server and they were ok, but they've been better with the linux/apache setup I host Wordpress on now. They do too much damn marketing, but the price is decent (around $15/month for 20 gigs of disk and a few hundred gigs of xfer), and the uptime and performance are good. The accounts also include several MySQL instances, web stats, a couple of hundred email boxes, email forwarding, ftp sites, etc., all the usual goodies.

You're best to get a tad more expensive host that does not offer unlimited everything. The ones that offer unlimited are massivly overselling and probably wont actually be able to handle giving it to you.

I keep hearing a lot about 1&1 also. Any inputs?

Just curious, what are you planning on doing that you need 'unlimited' space and transfers? Or are you just looking for lots of both for cheap?

Any site that offers unlimited is probably going to get lots of people hoping to use it to distribute files or streaming. I doubt it'll be as unlimited as you think.

I like dreamhost too.. your bandwidth grows on a weekly basis just for being a customer.

Bandwidth limits @ dreamhost are a joke. You can't actually use what they give you.

Are you referring to the "unlimited bandwidth" plan?

If so, they tell you what you should expect from it. It says that if you plan to host files and expect to have heavy traffic then that plan is not for you since it is not really unlimited.

I don't think any host can truly offer unlimited bandwidth.

I currently have 8GB of bandwidth a month from dreamhost and I can easily track how much I am using and how much I have left.

TBH I haven't looked at their plans in the recent past, but they used to sell plans with like 500MB of space and 2000GB of transfer. Given the CPU limits on the servers, it was technically impossible to use all of your transfer within a month. It sounds like they have changed that a bit though, and now offer smaller plans.
