Before i start a very important task, i usually get incredibly giddy and jumpy, and my start starts racing a mile a minute and occasionally that turns into stress if i'm in a tight situation. What do you think is the best way to calm yourself down if you are getting really giddy and excited with a fast heartbeat?

If you'd like to avoid this condition totally, you may perhaps look into improving your physical fitness. When I had time to work out, I noticed a definite correlation to my exercising my body to the length of my attention span when sitting still, and to a generally calmer state of mind. Just a thought.

The cigarette only helps if you are already addicted. A cigarette actually has nothing in it to calm you down, it is because you are going through withdrawl that you feel a calming effect when having one.

Why don't we just be overly defensive when someone explains a physiological effect because we're focused on defending people who indirectly cause other people sickness and discomfort due to their own addicting habit?

basic meditative practice. Slow your breathing down, deep slow breaths, focus on a single word in a comfortable position. If you want to go deeper, get 'meditation from dummies'.
