I want to work out on my abs, need to know some good excercises to do it. I tried situps but I heard those aren't really that great

Best way to do it is to change your diet so you burn more calories then you consume. While you're at it, blast away with crunches and all the other regular stuff.

situps, leg raises, and use a medicne ball and lift your legs up with knees bent, then raise your torso so it is at a 45 degree angle, and hold the ball in your hands, and rotate from side to side, 3 sets of 15 really gets your oblinques

If you want abs, first you gotta burn off that gut. Go running, do lots of cardio, plus those ab exercises, and youre all set.

Crunches, focus on lifting your upper body with only your gut. Your aim is to compress inwards and not necessarily upwards. Doing this correct and you should very much so feel it. Crunches are more for the upper abs, leg lifts for the lower.

If you want to work out your abs then they probably arn't perfect and when you do these exercises you should feel it very well. If not you arn't doing it right.

pretty much any reputable source of exercise info. situps work mainly your psoas and only hit your abs indirectly.

I don't know anything about this site but the info here is correct--link

I just bought myself one of those giant inflatable balls that you can use for all kinds of ab exercises. Its better than going it on the ground because you get a better range of motion and its not hard on your back.

It r0xx0rz and my abs have gotten significantly stronger

everyone saying "do 100 crunches a day" has no clue wtf they are talking about. you dont want to do your abs anymore than you want to do normal muscles. if you workout your abs CORRECTLY, you will not be able to do your abs the following day, and possibly the day after that as well, becausee they will be sore.

you want to workout your abs once every 4 or 5 days at the soonest. I personally do them once a week. and I think I have pretty good abs ...

http://www.drewscrib.com/galleries/aruba/pages/IMG_0256.html

I do 3 sets of leglifts of about 17 or so each set, on a declined bench.
I then do the leg raise thing where you kind of try to "sit on the air" by bringing your legs up, and i have a dumbell between my feet to add more resistance.
I then do 2 sets of crunches of about 17 - 20, concentrating on the muscle contractions and holding it for a second or two each time.
I then do 2 sets of crunches on that thing where you sit down, but have you back part behind you to rest your back on. I hold a medicine ball or dumbell and hold it against my chest as I'm at the low part of my crunch, and as I raise up from the crunch, I lift the dumbell up. I hold it there for a second or two.
I then do these side twists things for my obliques.

It's hard to tell people how to do these exercises, its much easier to actually demonstrate them heh.

Situps are bad for you; they strain your lower back.

Do crunches. They're totally different than situps. If you need to learn how, go to www.bodybuilding.com or a similar site. There's plenty of tutorials.

alright thanks all, going to try somethings out. my problem is when I try to do crunches i don't feel anything, you breathe out when you are doing the crunch and in when you are going back right? Also, I don't have a gut, in fact I'm trying to gain more weight actually. (I'm ~140lbs 5'10)

This is what I learned. As mentioned before, situps are pretty much useless. You want to get your body fat % to around 10% or lower so you can "see" them.
Some exercises that I do are :

Vacuums (8 reps)
Lying Leg Hip Raises /w weights on my ankles (8 reps)
Side Crunches (8 reps)
Crunches w/ dumbbell (15 reps)
Twisting Crunches /w dumbbell (8 reps)
V-Ups (8 reps)
Straight Leg Hip Raises (8 reps)

I do 3 sets of these with breaks in between.

If your abs dont "burn" when you do exercises, try putting weights behind your head or on your legs (depending on which exercise) so you get some resistance.

Here's a good site with exercises for all body parts and pictures on how to do them - LINK

I do my exercises every 2 days a week (Monday, Thursday, Sunday, Wednesday, Saturday, Monday).
And do not workout your abs EVERYDAY. They are muscles and they need rest.

Situps suck simply because they force more involvement of the hip. Crunches help isolate the abdominals.

BTW, do weighted ab exercises regardless of what exercises you decide to do. I often wonder why people will work out with weights on every other muscle group but then lay down and start doing a million crunches with no weight. Why treat that group any differently?

You can do abs every day or every other day. They're not like other muscle groups. Bodybuilding 101.

Also, it was entirely unecessary to link a half naked photo of yourself dude. Please refrain from attempting to impress the ATOT population with your ROCK HARD ABS!

Here's a good reference for ab exercises.

heh cause people don't know how to workout properly :)

its pretty obvious from the misinformation in this thread. over half the people in this thread seem to not really know the proper way to work out abs.

Just like in English 101 they tell you that you don't need to use commas and have compound sentences, but instead just have 2 seperate sentences ...

dude, your wrong. you CAN do it every 2 days if you want. muscles take abpout 48 hours to completely heal, and it can take even longer.

continue to do what you want to do ... i'll continue to do the correct thing.
