As long as it is 100mbs you should be fine. I have moved large files (gig +) on a LAN before and It only takes a few minutes. If that doesn't work try a crossover cable going from ethernet card to ethernet card. Good Luck!

If they both have XP as the operating system this is easy through the router. In my network places- view network connections, click the set up an office network and follow the steps. You have to do this on both machines and reboot, but then they will be networked, and you can share folders and map network drives between the two machines.

You don't need to use any extra equipment - a Cat-5 crossover cable between the computers is it. If you want to use the cable for other purposes, just get a straight Cat-5 cable, a coupler and a crossover stub cable. If you can put the puters side-by-side, you might be able to get away with just the crossover stub cable (a foot or so long).

Btw, another Ultra fast but lil risky way is to take the laptop HDD out and connect it to the PC.

You need an 2.5" IDE to 3.5" adapter for this btw...

put your laptop on top of the desktop. Osmosis might occur. :)

I'd go the networking route.
If you don't want to use the router, use a cat5 cross-over cable, as was mentioned here. Then you can go straight from the network card of the desktop to the network card of the laptop. If you are running winxp, it should be quite easy to set up, almost automatic. If you chose to go through the router, you just need another cat5 cable (non x-over) to go from the router to your laptop.

if you have any questions while setting it up, just pm me.
