? Best way to transfer ~2GB long-distance?

Okay, it'll take forever to email as an attachment... what's a better way for someone to transfer me +2GB worth of data using nothing more than our fast internet connections? FTP? I'm new to FTP... 😕
 
sure, ftp and a little patience go a long way. but, if you can burn that data onto 3 cd-rs or 1 dvd, and just snail mail it. it may be faster.
 
yup, you pretty much answered your own question. There are lots of easy to use free/shareware ftp programs out there.
 
have the person compress the data first send it in sections if you have to, use winRAR or winACE (winace can compress batter)
have the person compress the file into Whatever size you want him to send at a time then send it via FTP (just download a free one if you dont have one, check download.com )
 
FileZilla rules! Open Source FTP client (and server), clean interface with lots of useful features. My favorite feature on the client is the multiple simultaneous tranfers.

Though 3CDs or a DVD would be alot easier.

I don't understand why mailing CD's over the border would be easier than electronic transfer! Sure it may take all night with a 1.5 megabit connection but c'mon, that's got to be better than a week in the mail.

If one of those FTP clients are easy to use, it sounds good. 🙂
 
FTP...besides, I dont think you could attach a file that big to an email even if you wanted to.

Assuming both sender and receiver have typical DSL connections and the transfer rate is 25KB/S, then it'll take about 22 hours to send 2GB by FTP. Have the sender run an FTP server daemon and the receiver can use an FTP client or web browser to connect and download.

Considering that there's a holiday weekend coming up, this will be faster than snail mail.
 
Forget about email. Your email server almost certainly wouldn't allow for such large attachments. Plus, sending email attachements increases your file size by 33% because of uue/mime or whatever encoding.

This is between countries. Heck, yes it'll be faster. A day vs. a week? Come on guys... "mail" indeed..

Dude go get a downloaded copy of guildftp and set it up. Then have the person download from you. It will be so much faster especially if you do it at night. Nobody on means better bandwidth especially for cable.... Good luck
 
one alternative to ftp is DCC via IRC.

download a irc client like mirc, both of you join the same network -- one that supports DCC -- make yourself a channel: try just putting the following into the bar-
/j #bluemax

right-click on your friend there and select DCC... your friend should probably setup the DCC options to auto-get file and resume incase it fails at any point. the main problem with this setup though is if it breaks at any point the sender has to manually tell it to resend, unlike ftp.

ftp is almost certainly the "best" way to do it, but IRC DCC is actually very convenient, especially if youre already a user. if you want to use ftp, get guildftp (or any other program i suppose) and shouldnt be hard if you rtfm 😛
 
dude, in my experience it's not worth it. I assume you're sending stuff from Canada to the U.S., right? well, I think mail is the ebst option - you'd be surprised just how fast and efficient this old service is.
 
I'd put it in an archive called "File_For_My_Buddy_John.zip" and use Kazaa. That way you don't have to set up an FTP server and you still get nice recovery if the download doesn't go through.

Actually, that wouldn't work because KaZaA does not search the entire database of connected users. Read up on KaZaA's supernodes and you'll understand why. You could boith find a program allowing you to conect to the same supernode, then it may work. But, if the host leaves, you'll have to find each other again. Just do it through FTP.
 
If they need the file fast, and/or you can send to them quickly, go for that. If you can't send very fast, I'd recommend using mail that way it wont tie up your connection.
