Best way to tansfer files to new computer?

I have Dell P133 with Win95. I have a new P4 2.0A system coming from Gateway, probably tomorrow. Is it best to yank my 6 year old drive out and drop it in the new machine or is there a better way to transfer info from the old to the new computer. Thanks for any help you can give. 🙂

Best way would be to take the HD out of the Dell and temporarily connect it to your Gateway (time consuming to do, but you'll end up saving time doing it this way)..unless you have a network set up in your home.

What OS is your new pc going to have?

If it has win xp, then there is a program that will transfer all your settings. All you have do to is install your old hard drive and I think it tranfers your files over to xp.

I have never done this, so I may be wrong on exactly how it works.

i use the method masterhoss mentioned and it works fine. it's fairly fast and easy.

Another vote for this method.

Though if you have some network cards, you can transfer them that way.

depends if there are alot of data to transfer. if you can do local network, then its easier and you dont have to take out the HD. it doesnt really take that long to transfer say 2 - 3 gig data.

Taking the HD out of the 133 will work fine, but I prefer to just push files over the network (assuming you have one, that is) or just burn critical stuff to CD. I don't like monkeying around with old hard drives for fear that I'll screw them over in the process (it's happened. I was pissed 🙁 )

I'd make sure you backup your *really* critical stuff prior to yanking out any hard drives, preferably to a CD media.
