Best way to take a screencap from a Video?

Title says it all, is there an easy way to get a single screenshot of a frame within a video file?

The file is MPEG2 640x480 7500kb/sec, i want to pull a single frame from it and wmp9+print screen usually works, but for some reason in this case it just bugs out. Ill paste the image onto a new photochop image (same resolution) and it doesnt come out, just black.
 
virtual dub isnt always so user friendly (at least the version i used wasnt) do you have a link to the latest version avail?

Everyone and their mother seems to want to give you their version, and they are all different file sizes...

Got virtual dub 9, it says there is no video data on any of the 3 mpeg files (all are MPEG 2 with different bitrates).

Note: These videos play fine in WMP9.

For a screenshot from a video? its not designed for that... i tried it anyway and it wont even take a screenshot of a video playing on the desktop.
 
You can go the long route and load the movie into Windows movie maker. That way it lets you look at every single frame and save them. No cropping or anything needed.

Windows Movie Maker doesnt appear to be a part of win2k (i remember it though maybe its an option) is movie maker on the win2k CD?
 
Easy, use fraps.... go to fraps.com and download it... it costs tho. But well worth it. Anything that access's the video card from games to movies you can capture with a screen shot or even make a movie of it. Fraps is more for games as it can display frames per second counter and averages and what not.

Some other ones with different functions with being able to capture certain areas on your monitor and what not are Hero and Hyper cam. Should be able to get either from tucows.

I have fraps, it doesnt work, how do you capture a screenshot from a video? ive tried just hitting the hotkey (default F10) and it doesnt take a screenshot. (although it does work in games, just not on the desktop with a movie playing).
 
Don't you have Premiere,Studio,videostudio or any video editing software?
I always do these things,especially a screenshot, with these programs since I can have each frame separately edited.
Google for mpeg2vcr if you need a free prog.
 
What version of fraps are you using? and some videos try to disaply the overlay fraps uses as well when they are playing... many less reputable videos *cough*cough*.... If you have an up to date version of fraps it should get around the disable feature. Try giving hypercam a shot for now. It's free to try, and you only get a little watermark in the corner of your screen that says hypercam... Annoying but it works and it's free. If you want to buy it, then you can remove the water mark.

I have Pinnacle Studio 8, patched to current ( i think its .12 ) , i have an old version of premiere i could try to do this with.
