Best way to submit my site to search engines?

When I search for my website with most of the major search engines my website does not show up. Whats the best way to get all of them to find me and so that I appear at the top?

Time is the best i have found. if you have dough, you can submit and get indexed quickly, but if you use one of the free submission tools and then sit and wait, you will get indexed in about 8 months..... google is faster than that though.

if you want visitors check out nomorehits.com it has worked well for me.

the answer is keywords. have them in your title, the very first text in the body of your page and distributed throughout the pages of your site. use keywords in your links wherever possible. also do what you can to get other sites linking to you; this especially counts in google.

edit: btw, it takes anywhere from weeks to months to get indexed on search engines. the days of altavista showing your site the next day are long over. google is okay and should only take a couple of weeks but you will need at least one other site already in their index linking to you or google will not index you (so they say). be patient and submit to the major search engines manually.
