best way to setup remote desktop sharring

im going out be living out of town for a few months, whats the best way to setup remote desktop sharring, i use the windows remote desktop at home. my internet connection is via comcast and im not sure how often my IP adress changes, i remember back in the day there were free DNS redirection services??
 
I think they are no-ip.com and dyndns.com. Also, forward port 3389 on your router.

Used to use no-ip. If you don't use your acount for 30 days they disable it.

Use means that you have to update the IP at least once a month.

DarkManX DNS service usually support port 80 (for Internet Browser) most of them charge extra for port redirection.

Since you are nor running an Internet site from home you just need to know your External IP

Use http://dydns.org beside DNS service their updater can be set to send an email with the external IP each time that it changes.

I have a Gmail that gets the email with the IP, and I can retrieve from any Internet connection in the world.
 
www.logmein.com is free and works well. Java and ActiveX-based clients means that you can use it on any platform, as well.

Also doesn't require you to forward any ports or know what your IP address is.
 
i have seen lots of my customers use www.gotomypc.com for remote access. not too bad of a link, solid and has a couple levels of pw access to get thru if youre trying to crack in. pretty smoov operability too.

Yeah, it's really simple to set up these (logmein and gotomypc) remote access utilities. You do have to trust the vendors, though. Only you can decide if that's an acceptable risk.
 
+1 Logmein, but as RebateMonger said, its all about your full trust of the provider. Other solution if you have time to set it up is Windows Home Server, you can try it for 60 days i think, and maybe by then you'r back home (in case you don't want to go into full licensing stuff)

It's 120 days. While a bit excessive JUST for the remote access feature, it does include free "dynamic DNS" from Microsoft. With a Plug-n-Play router, it should configure it automatically and will give menu-based access to all PCs in the home that are Remote-Desktop-capable (XP Pro, XP MCE, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate).
 
I use LogMeIn at times for specific simple tasks, however many times I use UltrsVNC which provides much more flexible Remote control capacity as compare to LogMeIn or RDT.

It takes one time 15- 20 minutes to set FreeDNS with a dynamic client and email the external IP to One's email address when ever it changes, and One time 5 minutes to
open the VNC port through the Router/Firewall.
 
Logmein or setup a VPN using Hamachi. Both are easy and dont really require messing with port forwarding.

If One needs any of the services marked by Red X, then it is Not Free (the most prevalent need is File transfer, it is not free). it cost $70 a year ($12.95 if one goes month by month) for one computer, $240 a year for 5 computers.

UlraVNC provides better overall control, it is Free, and can control as many LAN computer that I want.

So in my case.

Spend short time to set UltraVNC, get more flexible Control, and then use it with may computers for Free.

Or pay LogMeIn $240 for a year for 5 computers.
 
I also use logmein because its free and serves my simple, simple needs.

They offer a free trial of their full pro version when you first sign up, but you might want to check exactly what your needs are with what the free version offers.
