Best way to sell textbooks

I heard that selling a textbook through half.com or amazon is a good idea. Is this true? I know for a fact that the college bookstore WILL rip you off when they try to buy your books back.

Is half better than amazon or the other way around? Has anyone have any experience selling books from one of these sites?

thanks,
don

I've heard they charge you a $15 surcharge. We really should make a book trading/selling forum here or on another site. It would be really helpful at the beginning of the semester.

I will say that you can do much better selling directly than going through a bookstore. However, you may want to check with the bookstore before trying to sell directly. If you are lucky, they won't have met their quota for the book and you can get MAD cash back, depending on the book. I once bought an engineering book from a friend for $40, and sold it right after I finished the final for $50 at the bookstore.

What books are you considering selling? Any chemical engineering books?

You could always go to the same class next semester or go to the college bookstore and look for people who are gonna buy the same book and start selling books that way...not everyone buys their book before class starts

I once bought a book for $55 then next semester I went to the bookstore and saw this guy who was gonna buy the same book that I didn't need anymore and sold it to him for $50

Not bad...just a thought 😉

I've sold a few textbooks on Half.com for a hell of a lot more than the campus bookstore would have given me. They were smooth transactions and the more popular books sold fairly quickly.

I haven't tried Amazon since the commission charge is a bit higher (15% + $0.99 vs. 12.5%) but I might list some of the ones that haven't sold on Half.com yet.

dont alot of students post books for sale on those bulletin boards around campus with those peel off phone # thingys.? like rgwalt said, probably get the most money selling books directly.

Find the mailing list for the class the semester after you use your book. Then just email the mailing list in the first few days of class...you'll have dozens of responses 🙂

Lord I've sold a bunch of books on half. I found I get a heckuva lot more money there too, even after the commission and shipping. Dunno about Amazon though
