I have a suspicion that one of my hard drives has errors.

I say this because EVERY time I do search on that machine it gets to a certain point and the machine crashes.

What is the best way to run CHKDSK ?

Is it better to run from Computer Management console or to boot into DOS?

If better from DOS, could someone provide step by step instructions pls.

TIA

Mark

Which os do you have? I take it that it must be 98,ME etc if you can boot into DOS? Running a thorough scan in windows should be able to find any errors, it is only when the computer won't boot up that you really need use other methods.

I suggest you download the appropriate HD diagnostic utility from the maker of your HD.

CHKDSK missed a defect area in the area occupied by my OS partition. It never showed up in normal system operation, but when creating images of my OS partition, they failed byte-for-byte image verification.

WD DLGDIAG5 found the site and fixed it.

Hope this helps!

Yes, you get a message that says something along the lines that the volume is locked and you can schedule it to run on restart.
