I came back to my Mom's house, and it stinks very badly. I dont need any wise cracks, i cant explain the smell, its a cross between mold and death. AS im typing this im picturing like a green wave of scent going through my nose and shortneing my life span. ITs not just in one area of the house, once you walk inside its right there, and then as you walk through the house you kinda get used to it, but i can tell its the entire house...its so bad im gonna sleep in my car.

i heard theres a team of experts who clean anything; same people who work to clean crime scenes with dead bodies and stuff that have been rotting for possibly days, weeks, months and they seem to always somehow get the job done... i dunno i saw it on mythbusters

Is it from the carpets? Was there a flood there recently?

If the house has a crawl space, check under there and see if something has died

My neighbor's house smells, too. He is also old. Somehow, homes with old people take on an odor. I don't think it's a hygiene thing. I just happens.

I doubt it's a mold problem. You would recognize a moldy, musty odor.

You could get the carpets and drapes cleaned, but I bet the odor comes right back.

I was broke alot in college and have lived in some shthole places. The following has always worked wonders for me.

Start with a hepa air filter.
Then buy a dehumidifier - about 100 bucks at any walmart. I always use these. They will shut down any mold growth. If it is a large house you might need 2 or three. 1 works for like 1000 sq feet.

Run both.
80% of the time this combo will work wonders.

Since the floors are tile, do an ammonia scrub to remove any obvious odors.
Check the crawlspace underneath if it exists for obvious things.

Make certain there are no water leaks under the house. A small leak would not raise the bill largly and might create lots of dankness.

Change all filters on anything that uses them (furnace, air conditioner, vacum cleaner (this is an often overlooked one).

Clean the trashcan with bleach.

Clean all the drains in the house with some liq plumber stuff.

After you have rinsed the liq plumber stuff VERY well, chase it with a couple of cups of bleach.

Septic system? Put some Ridex in.

Clean the garbage disposal well.

Check the attic if there is one.

Launder curtains if you have them.

Use an odor neutralizer on furniture (febreeze).

Move the fridge and clean the condensation pan underneath - it is guaranteed that it needs to be cleaned probably.

Move the stove, clean behind it.

Mold is quite bad for your health...its the airborne spores that are more dangerous..

The hepa filter and dehumidifier combo will shut this right down.
