I'm moving into a new house this weekend. The previous owners had cats that stunk up the garage with cat urine.

The previous residents just moved out a week ago and the realty company sprayed some sort of cleaner, but its only doing so much.

Any tips for getting the odor to go away. I assume its been soaked into the porous concrete.

You can also seal the current floor, locking the odor in, but it will always be there.

The garage has new sheetrock. The walls were actually bare before... I wonder how much cat odor is stuck inside the walls now.... hmmm :hmm:

How much work/cost is that? I'm just renting this house, but I do plan to spend some significant time in the garage.

If you're just renting, then I would just live with it, unless it is truly overpowering.

Eventually the smell WILL go away, it's not an endless magical source of energy. Until then there is a cat spray you can buy at a pet shop to assist in odour but I've no idea how well it works.

Well, I plan to live here for at least two years and I'm the kind of person who spends many hours a week in the garage doing various things.

I've used those bacteria pet removal sprays on carpet before. Ito worked really, but I remember it being expensive.

I would need a lot so that I can spray it all over the garage and spray enough so it soaks into the concrete.

I'd get a deck brush, a bucket, and use some detergent and scrub down the whole garage floor. Then hose it out and let dry.

Then to absorb and lingering odor put one box of baking soda in each of the four corners of the garage. About the best you can do.

White vinegar. I remember my dad used it to get the smell of cat urine out of a chair once, and it was far more absorbent than concrete. White vinegar and a scrub brush. Do it once a day for a week or so.

My car pissed in my carseat... it took forever and a lot of work for the smell to go away, but it did eventually go away.

I would recommend rinsing it and pouring vinegar over the offending area...
Then get some cat urine odor remover from a pet store.
This will remove about 80% of the smell. The rest, you'd just have to deal with for 2-3 months and it should start going away.

If you think the odor is in the concrete then you can use muriatic acid. Sold in the paint section of hardware stores. It is extremely strong so be careful with it and wear gloves and have plenty of ventilation and eye protection. Normally it is used to etch concrete because it removes a very thin layer on the surface priming it for painting, but it also removes things like oil or urine .

I went to Home Depot tonight to get some other stuff and I saw the gallon jugs of Odoban.

Each gallon jug makes 4 gallons of cleaner and costs about $10. That should be enough to really get the concrete soaked.

Cat Urine Smell Remover Recipe For Free

If the above doesn't work, you can always try muriatic acid or perhaps TSP (be careful with acid, because it can damage the concrete if left on too long.)

I've tried that one on my carseat. It didn't work nearly as well as getting the urine odor remover from the pet store.

It did still take out a lot of the smell though. It's a cheap alternative, but it's not a replacement in my experience.
