Best way to reinstall 10.9?

Never had to do this but would I be able to just download OSX 10.9 from the apple store and reinstall over the current 10.9 installation or is the best way to push command R during start up and Install this way via the OSX Recovery console?

I will have a backup but this should keep the data intact as well right? I am not planning on erasing the hard drive first, unless this doesn't work.

I did this a few weeks ago on my macbook pro. Used Command+R and reinstalled the OSX, it kept all my data intact.

I thought It would wipe out the drive and install a fresh OSX but that requires additional step before to erase the drive.
