best way to learn or understand SIP?

I am working with SBCs and VOIP and I am really struggling with SIP and understanding it, particularly troubleshooting it.

Does anyone have any recommendations on the best way to learn or understand it?

I've already done the SIP School but didn't find it very helpful.
I'm checking out 2 video courses on Udemy as well.

I'm much better at hands on learning than reading.

If someone asked me to teach them everything about electrical engineering, I would have no clue where to start or what to tell them as the subject is incredibly broad. You've said basically nothing about your intent. Are you trying to start a company based on SIP service? Are you trying to roll your own PBX installation? Are you wanting to learn for shits and giggles? I can't tell what you want to learn, so I have no idea which advice to dispense. All I know at this point is you've read some stuff online and you are a hands-on learner. If you literally want to know everything about SIP, I probably can't help.

I am providing support for SBCs and need a better understanding of SIP to help troubleshoot calls that are failing or not working properly.

I have very basic high level understanding of SIP but need to know more.

I paid for my SIP data to enable my VOIP home phone.

Once that was setup in the ATA I couldn't call out.

There were 2 reasons for that:
1. I didn't forward the proper ports
2. my router still refused to play nice with the ATA.

my solution for #2 was to use a free STUN server to get the IP I needed.

since then, my VOIP has been fantastic.

i'm no expert, but my understanding was that a sip line was a big' ol' cable. a whole bunch of VOIP calls run on it. if calls are failing, it's not the sip line perse, but rather whatever software you use to divide the various VOIP clients over the line.
