I did a search and found a few threads about this, but no consensus on what the best way to learn was. Rosetta stone? Some sort of online lessons? I'd like to avoid going to a physical class if possible.

Basically, I want to learn Japanese and German. Japanese more so.

try Pimsleur. I haven't really used Rosetta Stone to compare, but I can't say enough about how awesome Pimsleur is.

but yeah, the only real way to learn a language is immersion. Best if you move to that country and live with a family (preferably with kids--simple language use) that only speaks that language. ;)

Something like Pimsleur will help if you throw it on your iPod or whatever and listen while commuting. Then check out CL or whatever and try to find a language coach, or others that will help you converse for an hour or so--per day would be best.

Yeah, learn profanity first. Then you learn how to put swears together with nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. to insult those around you until you find someone that speaks the language. Then either they punch you out or laugh at then correct you.

This happened to me. We had an East Indian dude who spoke Hindi. I had him teach me all the swear words - and I can still remember them, that was 10 years ago.

My fiancee is using Rosetta Stone right now, and it seems to be working. She's only been using it for 3 days, doing the computer exercises and listening in the car to the audio, but she has a pretty basic foundation going. I'm fluent in Italian, so I'm able to help, but I feel that she's picking up the basic grammar and verb conjugation very quickly.

Pimsleur works ok at best. I am doing the same thing, learning Japanese and German and you will learn a bit but not much. Watching movies with subtitles would probably be best in my opinion.
