best way to keep win98se from searching for cd

wat's the best way??....i know i can just copy the .cab files to the hard drive, but then it still asks for the cd, instead of inserting it i just show it where on the hard drive the cabs are, but is there a way to keep it from asking at all?...do i need to save those files to a specific location?

good question. you're on track with the cab files and what not

only way i ever got it to stop asking was to actually install '98 *from* the cabs (i.e. rip cabs off cd to formatted hard drive, and run setup.exe from cabs on hard drive)

when windows is installed off the cabs directly, it always looks in that directory instead of asking for the cd

in your case, though, i'm not sure if there's a workaround, a registry hack or what not

shouldn't be *that* big of a deal to point it to the directory, though, right?? 🙂

Copy your files to HD then open Regedit and edit this string,

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

once in setup look to your right for " SourcePath " double click on it & add the path to where you copied your cab files.

Start with a clean HD. Copy CAB files to HD. Install from CAB files on HD. It will still ask for the CD but will know the setup path (ie; HD) and go there first to find the needed file. This method is similar to the REGEDIT fix above.
