I am planning to remove my Matrox G450 and install a GF4 Ti4600. Should I switch to SVGA mode, remove the Matrox drivers completely, and then install the Nvidia reference drivers. Or just install the Nvidia card and drivers, then remove the Matrox drivers? Or does it matter any more?

if u using win2k/XP, use the add/remove program to remove your matrox driver. and double check it is removed in the device manager. Using a little regCleaner proggie would be good too.
Then remove the matrox card.

Install the nVidia card.
Install the det driver..
u should be good to go! 🙂

oh and SVGA mode u mentioned iz a good idea too. i used to do that on the win98 os.. to remove older driver and install newer driver for my nvidia card..
