Best way to hook up my iPod to my receiver

I've got an Onkyo receiver model number TX-SR605 that I want to hook my iPod up to. I know I could use just the headphone jack output split to left/right to play the iPod, but I was curious if they are any other better ways?

I've used a simple headphone jack--> RCA audio cable for years. Just recently, however, I went ahead and bought an Apple dock+AC adapter+Apple remote. That way, I can leave the dock plugged into the wall and my receiver, and grab the iPod from there when I want it portable. You can get generic docks and remotes for less than the Apple stuff, if you're interested. A lot cheaper than the Onkyo (or Denon, like my receiver) docks, though you can't control the iPod with your receiver's remote this way.

Is it me? or are these damn docks to expensive? $70 just so you can listen to your iPod on the stereo?

I went the phone jack route myself, also allows me to hook up my laptop to the stereo system as well.
