Best way to hide or password protect a folder on XP home edition?

Seems to be harder than it should to do this.

I would like to make unavailable one particular folder (full of sensitive stuff) to anyone but me.

Just right click the folder and go to shairing and security and let only you have access to it.

With XP Home edition that option is only available for the user profile folder which prevents another logged on user from accessing anything inside that particular folder only.

I want a program to protect any folder anywhere.

You can do the same thing in Home edition also. Here is how you enable it...

1. Open My Documents.
2. Open the Tools Menu and then click Folder Options.
3. Open the View Tab.
4. Scroll down to the bottom and uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)".

There you go! :)

No that is not possible to do with Home edition. And even if it were it would be only for that particular folder.

The program that I linked to seems to be working fine so far. Very simple and to the point.

It is possible. Use CACLS.EXE from the command prompt or boot into safe mode and go to the security tab in folder properties.

I think people are misunderstanding what I was looking for.

A way to password-protect a folder.

I want a way to hide or lock any folder anywhere.

The methods listed so far would not prevent someone logging on as me from seeing a private folder.

I don't know about password-protecting a folder under just Windows, but you might want to look into PGP (Pretty Good Privacy), which can make an encrypted partition or folder that you can only access with the correct password/key. The later versions all seem to be costly so I suggest having a look for an older version that's free.

Not bloated, it seems very easy to use and is seemingly quite effective.

Anyone else use this? Any comments?

Folder Access freeware

I like how they have the empty "awards and reviews" section on that page. :D

anyone want to take wagers on how easy it would be to break the "security" of this program?
