Uninstall the drivers from control panel. Boot into safe mode and run driver cleaner. That's pretty much it. Has worked flawlessly for me.

Why is it neccesary to use Driver Cleaner after uninstalling the drivers from control panel? Surely that is enough? Even ATi's own driver install procedure only mentions using control panel for eg. Could someone please explain whats the deal here?

Yep driver cleaner. I would also use Regcleaner in your case to see if there's anything left in registry.

my ex-girlfriend bashed my 40gb hard drive in the front yard with a garden tool and that seemed to do the trick :)

To put it simple Driver cleaner does a better job,it`ll find some old ATi files left behind and remove them,I use it all the time for each and every ATi driver update and it always finds some old ATi files even after I`ve done the usual remove from Control Panel bit.

Just follow the instructions in the readme file and you can`t go wrong.

You could always use ATi's uninstall tool, if it's still available on their site. Be aware that it uninstalls everything ATi in your system, including their DVD player and demos.
