Best way to gauge overall system performance?

I'm running an Athlon 1GHz with nearly a gig of RAM, but my computer still seems to bog down (running Nero & Kazaa together pretty much shuts everything else down). I'm trying to figure out what the problem might be so I can decide if & what I need to upgrade.

I'm thinking that one possible issue might be that I may have mixed RAM speeds (I've got a 128MB, 256MB & 512MB chip & I think 1 or 2 of them might be 100MHz ram)

Any suggestions for getting this thing running better are appreciated.

Not sure about Nero, but KaZaa will eat up everything you can throw at it. I've had the same problem on two systems, an XP1700 and an Intel PIII-550. KaZaa is terrible software and it also has a ton of spyware that comes with it. I suppose that could be a part of the problem. I now have limited KaZaa to one stripped down PC that I affectionally refer to as my "Internet slut" due to the unwanted background activity that comes with KaZaa. Suggest that you download Ad Aware and clean your system if you haven't done so already. Ad-Aware

which os? if 98 you will need to perform the fix to allow it to address more than 512 megs of RAM, what speed processor is it? what speed is the fsb runnin at? Just a note, the individual sticks will NOT run at different speeds, if you have it set for 133 then they all run at that speed, that is good, if it is 100, then they all run at that speed, this can also affect the clock frequency of the cpu as the multiplier isn't being multiplied by the correct fsb for the chip.

I've already used ad aware to strip down my Kazaa to the equivalent of Kazaa lite.

As for what speed my RAM is running... how do I check that?

My OS is win2k pro & I'm running an Athlon T bird 1GHz chip
