Best way to do a m/b swap

bob4432

i have read all the articles and here is my situation - current home server setup is a axp2000 on a nf2 m/b using pata hdds. i want to swap out that cpu/mb combo with a p4 2.8c and i865pe based m/b. i am running windows 2000.

do i just uninstall the ide ata/atapi controllers, shut down and then start the machine back up with the other cpu and m/b connected?

Since its going from AMD to Intel, you'll probably have to do a complete reinstall of Windows.

🙁 that is not what i wanted to hear.....maybe i will just sell the p4/i865 board and not worry about it.....sh!t

Even if you are just swapping AMD to AMD a new format is a good idea.
Unless it's the exact same mobo and chipset I wouldn't NOT format the rig.
Why jeopardize any performance gains from an upgrade with a hosed OS?

I don't know if it matters to you, but Win2000 Pro technically does not support Hyperthreading/SMT either.

i hear what you are saying, i just don't have the time for a full re-install with all of the apache /php/mysql config atm that is all. but i guess the p4 setup would be a better future proof setup and then i should sell the axp to somebody cheap...

wouldn't it just handle it as smp? if there was an issue i could just turn off ht i guess

or i could put xp on it

See, there's the problem. It does. And SMT isn't really SMP, so faking it may result in performance drops. But like you said, you could always disable HT.

i see, performance is not really an issue though as it just serves up a few sites, printing and some storage for the rest of my machines.

my main reason for not wanting to re-install everything is there is a site on it that i have for friends and i that has about 50,000 pics on it, and it relies on a mysql db using the php script coppermine, and i know if i reinstall everything this probably won't go back in nicely....decisions, decisons...

/me votes for selling the Intel stuff, your AthlonXP ought to be fine for what it's doing.

I've migrated Windows 2000 installations from Intel machines to AMD ones with no problems. In some cases pretty complex servers.

NVidia to Intel though is going to be tricky without using a PATA IDE card you can swap between the two machines though.

that is probably what i am going to do....need to look around fs/ft to see what the 2.8c's and msi i865pe boards are going for now....

mechBgon -

do you know if you can start up a machine with just a cpu(hsf of course) and gpu without ram so i can verify what m/b i have? i just need to verify that mine does indeed have sata raid functionality, as i know it has sata.
