I would advise anyone against throwing them into the trashcan (especially not your own trashcan). Believe it or not, there have been many stories of obsessive girlfriends fishing them back out and "using" them to get pregnant.

When my current girlfriend and I were using condoms, she used to give me a really hard time about flushign them saying that it causes problems and that it is horrible for the enviroment.

She did not prove anything regarding this, but she generally has no logic to her statements anyway. Regardless, she might be right and I saw no problem just wrapping the condom in some TP and throwing it in the trash.
